  • 'We' - Thematic Classical Music Recital by Deepa-Divya Sisters presents the works of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Subramaniya Bharathi, Kanchi Chandrasekharendra Saraswati, Sethumadhava Rao and others to amplify themes  like justice, liberty, equality, fraternity.  Deepa and Divya would be accompanied by Pavani Mallajosyula (Violin) & Srikanth Ramachandran (Mridangam)

 

  • 'Granville Austin, the American Biographer of India's Constitution' - a Slide-based Talk by Vikram Raghavan on Granville Austin, the historian and diplomat and the American Biographer of India's Constitution, who lived in Washington, DC.

'We' - Thematic Classical Music Recital

Deepa-Divya sisters
Deepa-Divya sisters are the daughters of Dhanalakshmi Balasubramaniam and K. Balasubramaniam, founders of alaganamrutham,a well-known Indian classical music organization in India. They are currently under the tutelage of "Padmabhushan and Sangeetha Kala Acharya" P. S. Narayanaswamy. They are also receiving voice training from world renowned and India's leading voice expert, Ananth Vaidhyanathan. They had their initial vocal training from Srivanchiam Mani Iyer, Swamimalai Janakiraman, and undergone advanced training from O.S. Thiagarajan, and Prema Rangarajan, renowned gurus in the music circle. Their aunt "Ganakalabhushana" R.A. Ramamani is a mentor and guide.

Deepa-Divya sisters have given several vocal concerts in the US and India. They have been accompanied by eminent artists such as Thanjavur Ramadas, Kalaimamani M. Narmadha, V.V. Srinivasa Rao, Trichy Murali, Usha Rajagopal, Melakaveri Balaji, Manarkoil Balaji, Madipakkam Murali and others.

Pavani Mallajosyula (Violin)
Pavani Mallajosyula was initiated into learning by her mother Malladi Jayasri. She was recipient of the National Talent Scholarship for Violin and continued her tutelage under the guidance of Vidwan R.R. Kesava Murthy. She is presently guided by her aunt Vidwan. A.Kanyakumari. Pavani has received many prizes and awards from distinguished sabhas. She regularly accompanies many well known artistes and performs violin duo concerts along with her husband Srikanth Mallajosyula. Pavani, a software engineer by profession, teaches music in her free time.

Srikanth Ramachandran (Mridangam)
Srikanth Ramachandran learned mridangam for about 8 years in Chennai from Kumbakonam M. Rajappa Iyer and his son  K. R. Ganesh. He was a graded artist in All India Radio and gave performances in both Radio and Doordarshan . He has performed in December music season programs in Chennai and Thiruvaiyaru Thiagaraja Aradhana.
'Granville Austin, the American Biographer of India's Constitution' - a Talk

This slide-based talk focuses on Granville Austin, the historian and diplomat and the American Biographer of India's Constitution, who lived in Washington, DC. Using rare archival documents and photographs, the talk narrates Austin's life and work in India and the United States. Among other things, it describes how Austin meticulously reconstructed the making of India's constitution based on historical research, personal interviews, and field trips. It concludes with some reflections on Austin's enduring contributions to understanding modern Indian constitutionalism and democracy.

Vikram Raghavan 

Vikram Raghavan works for an international organization in Washington, DC. He is the author of a much-consulted treatise: Communications Law in India (LexisNexis 2006). Vikram has also co-edited a volume of essays: Comparative Constitutionalism in South Asia (Oxford University Press 2013). He maintains an active private interest in Indian history and constitutional law, and is working on a book about how India became a republic in 1950. He will be speaking in his personal capacity.
