"Where Football and Faith Intersect"

Dear Members & Friends of Our Savior's Lutheran Church,

So I can't help myself - more football talk from your pastor. It's not just me though, is it? Every radio station is talking non-stop about the super bowl. Every television newscast leads off with live super bowl coverage from somewhere around the Twin Cities. News stories and videos are clogging up my social media timelines. The Super Bowl is in Minneapolis this year and there is no escaping it! I happen to enjoy all of the coverage. You may not. Regardless, I think there is a lesson in it for all of us as we continue to witness this local phenomenon throughout the rest of this week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday.

My family and I spent Saturday night walking around the Super Bowl Live Experience on Nicollet Mall. It was cold, but it was fun. Picture the State Fair in subzero temperatures. Loud live music, people everywhere, enjoying themselves, eating good food, and bumping into one another. The NFL really knows how to throw a party! There was big fanfare as the two competing football team's flights arrived in the Twin Cities. Of course, the Eagle's players were met with a chorus of "Boos" after defeating the Vikings so badly in our last game.

Signs of the NFL are all over our communities. But the headline that most caught my attention this week was this one: "Snoop Dogg to Perform at Bethel University"! I immediately thought it was "Fake News", but I was wrong. Snippets from the article included, "This event is sponsored by the NFL and will include Snoop Dogg and other artists such as Sheila E., Sounds of Blackness, Tye Tribbett, The Clark Sisters, and Faith Evans. The NFL Choir will also perform." I didn't even know there was an NFL Choir! The article went on to say, "Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will receive faith and inspiration awards while other active and retired NFL players will share their faith stories."

Now, for those wondering, like I was, Bethel's response is, "Bethel is the host site, not the sponsor of the event. The NFL is paying to use the space. The lineup was determined just last week - we had no say in who was performing." I say "Good for Bethel!" What a witness this event could potentially be and a beautiful venue for it.

I must say I am impressed with the NFL and how they are trying to connect faith with football. For those wondering what Snoop Dogg has to do with faith ... well, apparently, he has recently released a gospel album. He announced it last June on his Instagram thanking his mother for showing him "how to live and to spread the Word."

Churches across the country this Sunday are expecting lesser church attendance - why? The Super Bowl. Year after year, the NFL has successfully marketed the event in ways that people have reserved the entire Sunday for partying and festivities. We don't want to miss those commercials either, do we? In the midst of the hype and hoopla leading up to this Sunday, I pray that you will keep a proper perspective of faith and football. Enjoy the festivities. Enjoy the game. Celebrate friends, family, and community in whatever that might look like as the big game comes to town. It doesn't happen often :)

Now to decide whether or not to sing "On Eagle's Wings" this Sunday in worship :)

In the name and spirit of Jesus,

Pastor Dale
