Gifts for Cyclists - December 2013

Greetings!

Wow, what a winter! It is the 1st of March and the snow is still over 3 feet deep in my back yard. Fortunately, the days are getting longer and warmer and soon we will  be cycling in New England. I recently read that one of the key traits of successful people is that they plan vacations. Why not position yourself for success in 2013 and plan a vacation with us.

New Cape Breton Tour Date

Cape Breton
We have added a new departure of our wonderful Cape Breton Tour September 8-14, 2013.

National Geographic Traveler says of the region, "Besides the natural beauty to be found here, the Cabot Trail immerses you in still vibrant Gaelic and Acadian cultures of Cape Breton."

In addition to some epic cycling, you'll taste some highland whiskey, hear local music, and marvel at stunning landscapes.

Electric Bike Tours
Portland Head Light
We are now offering electric bikes as an option on our 1/2 day "5 Lighthouse Portland Bike Tou"r and our new 1/2 day "Kennebunk Bike Tour."

With apologies to Bob Dylan, here is why. Two years ago, I was a purist believing that electric bikes were for the unfit. Many people thought that Dylan left his folk roots when he went "electric" to a chorus of boos at the Newport Folk Festival. I am willing to bet that many of those same people own every album he has ever made and love his post Newport work. Like those people I am letting go of my elitism and embracing a new future.

How did I get here? It was easy,  I rode a pedelec in Switzerland. A pedelec is an electric bicycle whose quiet electric motor engages and provides assistance when you start pedaling.  Every member of my group rode one and we all had the same reaction, WOW!

Post Switzerland, I started researching the e-bike world and was amazed at what I found.  Here are a few interesting statistics about e-bikes.

  • There are 125 million of them in use in China
  • 1.3 million e-bikes were sold in 2011 in Europe
  • Electric bike sales are expected to reach 47 million by 2018

They are a wonderful, green solution for local transportation

Why not try one in 2013?
