January 2018

January is the start of a new year and the start of many new and exiting things at PMA.  We welcomed the month with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the newly renovated entry.  Zoe Henderson, '18, won the second round of the Lion's Club Speech contest, students left for the March for Life in Washington, D.C., and we are ending the month celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

Ribbon Cutting

On January 7, PMA  held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the newly transformed atrium style entrance and updated foyer and offices.

The school is housed on the grounds of the late Edward F. Searles and the section that was renovated was his former carriage house constructed in the late 1800's. The Sisters of the Presentation purchased the property and opened the Academy in 1958.  The time had come to commit to a complete renovation.

In addition to adding an updated entrance, providing accessibility with a handicapped ramp and automatic doors making the front of the building completely accessible, additions such a lift and an accessible bathroom were also added.   The glass enclosed atrium offers a spacious waiting area and the foyer, classrooms, and several offices were moved and renovated including the Main Office, Head of School and Guidance Ofice.

"Today very exciting day," said Rose Maria DiFiore Redman, '85, Head of School. "It was not an easy process but our community was committed to improving the security and safety of our students and staff. The renovation added much needed accessibility to the historic Carriage House section of the school.  Improvements made will impact students' lives for years to come.
Thank you all for your support on this project and your continued support during our Capital Campaign."

Walk for Life
This year PMA continued its tradition of attending the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.

On Friday, January 19, twenty-three PMA students began this pilgrimage as they prayed, worshiped, marched, and listened to the numerous speakers that the Archdiocese of Boston presented.

The group traveled through the night to Washington D.C. and were able to celebrate Mass with Cardinal Sean.

From there, the students participated in the March and were given an opportunity to share their experiences and worship in adoration.    Before leaving  on Saturday , students visited both the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the John Paul II institute just outside of D.C.

This year marked the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.  This year's theme was how Love Saves Lives and emphasized how the culture of life is a culture of love for all people.  This is a message that was lived loudly throughout the weekend.

Zoe Henderson: Lions Club Youth Speech Contest Winner

Nathalie Garcia, '19  and Zoe Henderson, '18

I was humbled and honored to represent the city of Lawrence and PMA at the Lions club speech contest at the District level.
I first heard about the contest from Mrs. Viscosi and wanted to enter to share my experience as a volunteer at Camp Sunshine.
" Camp Sunshine's mission is to provide respite and support to each family member - children, siblings, and parents. Since its inception, Camp Sunshine has offered comfort, hope, and support to over 50,000 individuals from all 50 states and 27 countries." Through my speech, I wanted to remind others the importance of volunteering and how the experience could be life changing.

My speech would not be what is it without the help of Mrs.  Redman, Mrs. Viscosi, and Mrs. Zygmont. Most importantly, I want to acknowledge Camp Sunshine because without that experience and the inspiration given to me, my speech would cease to exist. This years' topic was "What is the impact of Volunteerism?"  Camp Sunshine is a little piece of heaven, where I experienced a constant, beautiful aroma of happiness and zeal. Not only was I inspired to make a difference, but it inspired me to create a ripple effect of kindness and positivity. Please keep me in your prayers while I advance to next round on Saturday, February 3. I also encourage everyone to research Camp Sunshine and volunteer if you can. I promise, you won't regret it.

Artist of the Month

PMA freshman, Leah Arnold was chosen as the Artist of the Month at the Memorial Library Hall in Andover.

Since the age of 9 Leah has been taking art lessons with Andover artist Janet Hamlin, who has helped her develop skills across different media. Most of her art focuses on nature or animals, but as someone who loves to travel, she also paints or draws places she has visited (one of the paintings shown is a clochán, a kind of monastic stone hut, from Ireland). Her art is done in many media, including acrylics, watercolor, oil, pastels, and even paper (collages). She also likes painting and drawing in different styles, whether more realistic and detailed or more impressionistic. The most recent of these pieces are the paired still-life paintings and the roosters, which she painted to celebrate the current year of the Chinese zodiac.
