Presentation of Mary Academy  ePathways

October 2016
October has been a great month.  The leaves started to change and the cool air has settled in, circling around all of the activity around campus.  October started with a wonderful weekend celebrating the Searles Legacy with a phenomenal Searles Ballroom Concert and Tours of the Searles Estate. New NHS members were inducted, the freshmen went on their first PMA retreat, and ended the month with UN Day and a game night.  We are in the second month of our Year of Mercy initiative and the first quarter is quickly coming to a close. You will read about it all this edition of ePathways.
PMA Today
October Works of Mercy

Coat drive collection
PM A is conti nuing with its initiative to integrate the Works of Mercy into the school year as we emphasize the corporal work of mercy, Clothe the Naked, for the month of October.  Students are encouraged to engage in activities which can help  those who are less fortunate than themselves by donating their old clothing or volunteering at locations such as Lazarus House.  With the anticipation of  the weather becoming colder, PMA has begun a clothing drive of gently used coats to help those who are in need so that they may stay warm through the winter.  We have placed a collection bin in the main office for anyone to drop off donations.  In addition to the coat drive, PMA has been asked to also participate in "Project Pocketbook."  We are collecting gently used pocketbooks for the month of October and filling them with various items such as toothbrushes and combs in November to coincide with our next Work of Mercy, sheltering the homeless.  We  encourage all students, parents, and members of the PMA community to join us in these efforts.
Searles Ballroom Concert
Friday, September 30 PMA held a concert in Mr. Searles former ballroom showcasing the talents of alumni, current students, and staff. With song choices ranging from Lady Gaga, to Broadway hits, to Opera. It truly was a night to remember.  The night was so beautiful, it will become a staple in PMA's annual events.  If you missed this concert, we advise you not to miss the next one.

Tours of the Searles Estate

A cool, rainy fall day didn't stop over 400 people from attending the Tours of the Searles Estate on Saturday, October 1.  Visitors  had the opportunity to tour the historic grounds and buildings that Edward F. Searles built almost a century ago.  PMA is housed on this campus, yet what lies behind the walls is a mystery for many.   It is a privilege to have such a picturesque, historic, and enchanting property to call home and even more wonderful to share its beauty with the community.

Eartha and Desert Field Trip- An out of this world Field Trip
Monday, October 10, Mrs. McGuinness and Mrs. MacGregor took 15 students to Eartha, which is the largest rotating globe housed in Yarmouth, ME.    They also went to the Desert of Maine, a unique geological formation of glacier sediment creating a desert in the middle of a coniferous forest, and finished the trip at  LLBean for some shopping.

Mrs. Frey's Grassy Assignment
Students in Mrs. Frey's Pre-calculus class recently completed a project to determine the number of blades of grass on the lawn of PMA!  Students applied their knowledge of Algebra and Geometry to solve a seemingly impossible problem.  They strengthened their problem solving skills by developing a plan, working together to execute their plan, and calculating the number of blades of grass based on their measurements.

Pictured are Emily Saindon, Maria Luiza Rebello, Helana Castillo and Dalton Conran counting grass; Morgan Cotnoir and Marissa Reardon measuring areas of the lawn that did not have grass; and Andre Desharnais measuring the perimeter of the lawn.

Freshman Retreat
On Monday, October 17, the Freshmen came together as a class to participate in the Freshman retreat.  The theme of the retreat took PMA's motto of "Discover You" and broke it down into three sections over the course of the day.  The retreat began with "Discover You" where the freshmen were encouraged by their sophomore group leaders to open up about who they are, where they have been, and where they want to go.  Sophomores Kolby Barbieri and Arianna Desharnais helped to spur the conversation by offering to share their own personal experiences about freshman year at PMA.  They shared how much they have grown during their time at PMA; how they are able to be who they truly are, express themselves, and how accepted they feel at PMA.

The retreat then transitioned into its second part of the day with an emphasis on "Discover PMA."  During this segment, students had the opportunity to ask questions from four student government leaders: President Eryn McGuinness, Secretary Sean Toomey, Treasurer Zach Robinson, and Publicist Nathalie Garcia. Freshmen asked the panel about the academic and social life at PMA; most importantly how to succeed as students and get the most out of their time at PMA.

The third and final segment of the retreat encouraged students to "Discover Jesus" as they discussed where they were in their faith lives .   Sophomores Sophia Bellia and Brady Quinn began the conversation by sharing their own experiences with faith and all the opportunities they have taken advantage of at PMA to help them to bring their faith to life and live it out.  The discussion culminated with Mass in the Sisters' Chapel with Fr. Richard Burton.

Between the small group discussions, the freshmen took part in various games, a tour of the Searles Estate, and a pizza lunch in the dormitory cafeteria.  Overall, it was a beautiful day which hopefully will help set the class of 2020 off to the right start.

Student Spotlight
NHS Induction
NHS members and inductees
PMA held its annual Honor Society Induction ceremony on Friday, October 7. Nineteen students were inducted into the various honor societies. Marisa George and Matthew Whinery, president and secretary of National Honor Society, were masters of ceremony, and led the NHS induction. As each student was called up to receive a collar and pin, Marisa and Matt read excerpts from their application essays. The SHF (French Honor Society) induction was led by Hannah Alvino and Eryn McGuinness, and current SHH members assisted in pinning the inductees. Camille Holleran and Faith Stewart led the SHH (Spanish Honor Society) induction. Finally, Morgan Cotnoir and Angela Walukevich were in charge of the Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) induction. The program closed with a performance by Select Chorus. We are very proud of our students' accomplishments!

They DO Know Diddley
After learning about the diddley bow in music class, freshmen Ben Ledoux and Mia Kochanczyk took the lesson a bit further.  They both made their own at home and brought them in to share with their class and music teacher,  Mr. Comtois.  Rock on kids.  Rock on.
