PMA Welcome Back Pep Rally   #PantherPride

Presentation of Mary Academy  ePathways

September 2017
Welcome back!  The 2017-18  school year is in full swing, classes are in session and the campus is buzzing with activity.  Our students participated in a back to school Mass with Bishop Hennessey and a welcome back Pep-Rally.  They were also busy collecting supplies for the hurricane victims and getting in the swing of classes.  The front of our school entrance is also undergoing some impressive changes and we look forward to its completion.
You will read about this and more in the issue below.
PMA Today
Hurricane Help

PMA empowers our students to assume roles of leadership and service to family,Church and community.  Upon returning to school, students did just that by working with Campus Ministry to collect items for hurricane victims. Freshmen brought in toiletries; sophomores were responsible for canned goods; juniors brought in baby items and seniors brought in items from any of the three categories.
Pictured is a small amount of collected items.  We are proud to see the spirit of our students come alive when they rally together for a great cause.
Students Celebrate Opening Mass with Bishop Hennessey

On Friday, September 8, PMA celebrated its opening liturgy. We were honored to have the Most Reverend Robert Hennessey, Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Boston for the Merrimack Valley, offer Mass.  Bishop Hennessey focused on four things in his homily: faith, family, school, and friends.  He emphasized how important these things are and how faith is the bedrock that keeps everything else in order.  As part of his blessing, he granted to PMA a "Bishop's Day" which extended the school's Christmas vacation by a day.  He also gave the students one night off from homework which was greatly appreciated.

Blades of Grass
Students in Mrs. Frey's Precalculus classes recently completed a project to determine the number of blades of grass on the lawn of PMA!  Students applied their knowledge of algebra and geometry to solve a seemingly impossible problem. It was e stimated the PMA lawn has between 22 and 57 million blades of grass.  The focus of the project was to strengthen problem solving skills and develop a problem-solving strategy.  Getting an exact answer was secondary; each class developed a slightly different strategy, which explains the wide range of estimates.   They strengthened their problem solving skills by developing a plan, working together to execute their plan, and calculating the number of blades of grass based on their measurements.  No matter what method they used, they made it fun and interesting.

PMA at Steubenville East

Several PMA students took part in the annual Steubenville East Conference at the Lowell Tsongas Arena this summer.  The Steubenville Conferences are held all over the country and serve as a three day, high energy Catholic retreat which focuses on praise and worship music, evangelic speakers, and adoration.  This year's theme was Elevate; how God wants to lift us up and what teens can do to embrace the universal call to become a saint.
Junior Aidan Lena thought "the entire weekend was an incredible experience" between the talks, the music, and especially the prayer event  on Saturday night.

Sophomore Elaina Latino was also blown away by the Eucharistic procession that occurred  Saturday night within the Tsongas Arena,  "It was an amazing and emotional experience to be a part of."

"Throughout the weekend I just felt this sense of happiness and joy being able to worship with so many awesome kids,"  said Sophomore Jamie Walsh.

All of the students agreed that the whole weekend really helped them to grow closer with God.

Catholic TV     by: Sophia Bellia, '19

During the summer, it's important to keep living out your faith. That is exactly what I , along with fellow PMA junior Aidan Lena did.
On August 28, we went to the Catholic TV station  located in Watertown, MA to participate in daily mass with Fr. Eric Cadin, the Associate Director of Vocations for the Archdioceses of Boston. We both participated in Mass as Aidan was the altar server and I was the lector.   Through this experience we got to live out our faith by taking part in a Mass that was broadcasted on the Catholic TV station and online so that millions of people could partake in the mass that day.
After daily mass was over, we went on a tour of the station. Aidan was intrigued with the control room while I found it very interesting how many people watch Catholic TV nationwide. This experience was both fun and interesting and we look forward to attending daily mass again with Fr. Eric Cadin in the future.
