Greetings!
July has come to an end, but the fun continues. Join us in taking a look back at some exciting and important news that happened this month, and the great times we have to look forward to as we head into the middle of the summer.
The City has unveiled the Proposed Fiscal Year 2018 Budget which includes updates on funding for public safety, parks, infrastructure projects, arts and culture, economic development, homelessness and much more.
In July the Long Beach Public Library officially accepted the National Medal from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington D.C. where Long Beach was one out of 10 recipients to receive the prestigious award. Another big award went to Long Beach's Assistant City Attorney, Michael J. Mais, for Public Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of California.
Other exciting news include the completion of POW! WOW! Long Beach murals, the unveiling of the indoor/outdoor mezzanine known as The Cove, and the 2017 World Series of Beach Volleyball with a performance by electronic dance music sensation Kaskade that attracted thousands of people to enjoy dance music on Long Beach sand.

On Monday, July 31, City Manager Patrick H. West and Mayor Robert Garcia presented the Fiscal Year 2018 Proposed Budget highlighting critical investments that will continue to improve infrastructure and public safety with the help of Measure A funds, expand funding opportunities to address homelessness in the City, enhance street and mobility projects like adding a new pothole crew, and much more. Long Beach Public Library Goes to
Washington D.C. to Receive the National Medal Award

On Monday, July 17, The Institute of Museum and Library Services hosted their 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service award ceremony where the Long Beach Public Library was one of ten institutions that were honored at the National Archives Museum located in Washington, D.C.

POW! WOW! Long Beach Beautifies the
City While Cultivating Community Pride

World Series of Beach Volleyball and Kaskade Event Attracts Thousands to Long Beach
|
|
The World Series of Beach Volleyball came to Long Beach from July 13 to 16 bringing some of the best players in the world and promoting itself as the preeminent event of its kind. The competition began Thursday at Alamitos Beach, and featured multiple tournaments. The event also included a National Volleyball League tournament, the AAU national championships, a coed tournament open to the public, and a beach party hosted by electronic dance music DJ and six-time Grammy nominee Kaskade where he performed to a sold-out crowd of roughly 13,000 fans.

The California State Bar’s Public Law Section has selected City of Long Beach’s Assistant City Attorney, Michael J. Mais, as the 2017 Ronald M. George Public Lawyer of the Year, in recognition of Mr. Mais’ exceptional work as an attorney and his 33 years of public service. Read more

Celebrating the Unveiling of
The Cove Event Space
|
|
On Thursday, July 20, The Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau unveiled the new meeting space called The Cove. The new space, on ground level at Seaside Way, is under the Terrace Theater plaza. This eclectic event space is a testament to Long Beach's vision to transform unused spaces into perfect open areas for pre-function receptions, concerts, and gatherings. The concrete pillars, walls, and ceiling of the underpass are decorated with special light fixtures designed to look like barnacles, fabricated by the same designers who worked on Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

My Brother's Keeper Alliance Convene Mayors and Community Leaders From More
Than 40 Cities at Long Beach Summit

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK Alliance) hosted a Regional Summit from July 26 to 28, convening more than 40 MBK communities to celebrate gains and progress made for boys and young men of color. The summit was two-and-a-half days of “hands-on” strategic work uniquely tailored to what MBK groups need to develop the programs and initiatives to take their current MBK initiatives to the next level to advance equity and opportunities for boys and young men of color in Long Beach and the entire country. Health Department Conducts Three-Day Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response on Zika and Mosquitoes
|
From July 20 to July 22, you might have noticed some people walking your streets wearing yellow vests and speaking to residents. These teams were part of a three-day Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) that was conducted to measure residents' knowledge of mosquito behavior, Zika, and how to protect against mosquito-borne illnesses. City Health Officer Advises Residents to Take Precautions with Higher Temperatures and Humidity Forecast
|
The Long Beach Public Health Department is advising residents to take precautions against the this week, particularly from Wednesday, August 2 through Sunday, August 6. The National Weather Service is forecasting highs in the 80s to loww 90s in parts of Long Beach and high humidity. Read more

City of Long Beach Donates Recycled Bicycles to Local At-Risk Youth
|
|
In May of this year, the City’s Department of Public Works asked residents to participate in Long Beach Bike Month by donating unwanted bicycles at three drop-off locations Waste Management, Inc. helped set up. On Monday, July 31, the City of Long Beach in partnership with Waste Management, Inc. and Pedal Movement, donated 27 bikes, that were refurbished from the donated bicycles, to two local non-profit groups, Long Beach Blast and Partners of Parks, in an attempt to improve mobility, encourage healthy recreation, and promote reuse and recycling. The nonprofits will give the bikes to underserved youth and families across Long Beach.

Virgin Orbit’s Space Launch Plane, Cosmic Girl, Makes it Home to Long Beach Airport
|
|
Virgin Orbit's Cosmic Girl Boeing 747 aircraft arrived to Long Beach Airport on Monday, July 31. The aircraft is a former Virgin Atlantic 747-400 passenger jet with modifications enabling it to fire a rocket that Virgin Orbit calls LauncherOne. The idea is for Cosmic Girl to be able to carry LauncherOne under one if its wings and fire the rocket spaceward like a giant missile. This event was a very exciting and emotional milestone for the airspace industry as well as for Long Beach.

On July 20, 2017 the music industry lost singer and songwriter best known as the frontman for the rock band Linkin Park. In April Long Beach was fortunate to have him perform at this year's Toyota Grand Prix with group Kings of Chaos. Below is a photo of him with Long Beach fans and another of him performing. Rest in peace Chester.
