Alpine Insights: May 17, 2012
I recently completed a class on leadership. The textbook was "The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader", a compilation of stories and quotes gathered by none other than John C. Maxwell. This is a book that I already treasure and I highly recommend it to you.
Good leadership seems to have gone down the same path as common sense. Both are sorely missing from our society today, I think.
We have watched country after country, including our own, fall into crises together. The leaders today are dealing with the lack of good leadership in the past and their own current lack of leadership. It seems we only elect leaders because of the way they speak or look, not paying attention to their true character. And they seem to run for office, not for the good of our country, but for their own selfish agendas. Color me very skeptical.
How have they led in the past? What have they led?
Has that prepared them for the position we are about to place them in?
These are the questions we should be asking.
The good news is that we have a great example of proper leadership in Jesus Christ. He showed us the way of leadership and broke down society's vision of what a leader should look like. Through His example, we now understand that a true leader is actually a true servant. While I have certainly learned that from the Bible, I am also grateful for the men in my past who have shown me that same servant-leadership.
We are in our summer series that we are entitling "The 7 Deity Signs". John wrote his gospel differently than the other three, Matthew, Mark, and Luke. His purpose was to reveal Jesus as the Messiah and he uses 7 different events to prove the deity of Jesus Christ. For the next two weeks, I will be sharing Jesus, the Source of life from John Chapter 2. The disciples are freshly chosen by this Rabbi and Jesus uses two different events to reveal Himself as God to them. In response, these disciples place their faith in Him and begin to understand that He is actually God.
I am praying that some will also come to that understanding as well and that this might be the time for them to give themselves to Him. Will you pray that with me?
I hope you'll join with us as we celebrate Jesus through music, prayer and the hearing of His word. And don't forget to bring someone with you.
Living life on purpose!
