The Hinterlands present Voice of the City
This Detroit-based physical theatre ensemble has been developing a new project that uses the tradition of vaudeville as a framework for community engagement. Their performance at MOCAD closes out their stay at the Museum before continuing the work at Alverno College in Milwaukee. In October, The Hinterlands present their work at the 2012 Shanghai Biennale as part of the Detroit pavilion presented by MOCAD.

FIGMENT catalyzes and celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream. FIGMENT's annual participatory arts event began in NYC in 2007 and has expanded to include events in seven cities.

FIGMENT is a free and non-commercial participatory arts event that seeks to broaden the definition of art and break down the wall between spectator and participant. FIGMENT is completely free to the public and is produced entirely by volunteer staff and artists.  The two days of events will be taking place on Belle Isle.

Lecture:  On Loan from the Detroit Institute of Arts  

Five Spanish Masterpieces celebrates the return of the DIA's Melancholy Woman to the museum after a lengthy period on loan to other institutions. DIA Director Graham W. J. Beal discusses how that painting and other acclaimed masterpieces, including Caravaggio's Martha and Mary Magdalene and Fuseli's The Nightmare, would rarely be on view in Detroit if the museum granted just the more serious loan requests that come in from around the world. Lecture Hall, 1st level.

 Voices; A Fiber Invitational
On display in the Kantgias/DeSalle Gallery, "Voices: A Fiber Invitational" demonstrates the unique way that the visual artist uses line, color, shape, texture, value and sometimes words to convey mood, emotion and meaning. The 'Voices' exhibit represents the talent of nine Michigan fiber artists. Voices  presents artists Jill Ault; Kathie Briggs; Barbara Bushey; Anne Hiemstra; Sue Holdaway Heys; Lynn Krawczyk; Carol L. Myers; Joan Potter Thomas and Desiree Vaughn.

The BBAC is also pleased to present the ink stamping portraiture work of Jeff Cancelosi (Northville) in the Robinson Gallery and colored pencil portrait artist Dean Rogers (Novi) in the DeForrest/Watson Ramp Gallery.

Canvas and Clay   

James Homer Brown brings his own inner vision of vitality and animation to his mechanical parts paintings. Forms take on lifelike gestures as they push and pull through space. His highly developed sense of design, form, texture and color bring us into his iconographic world.

Jeremy Forman's thought provoking ceramic and mixed media works represent visual puns on reality. His work examines how we question and view objects.

Reception Friday, July 20, 6-8pm.

Summer Invitational  

The Lawrence Street Galley presents its annual "Summer Invitational" for the month of July. This annual exhibition features the newest work by the local artists we most like and admire.

The gallery will showcase over 50 works in two and three dimensional media, as well as a new collection of work by member artists.

The Michigan Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art presents "Man Up!", a national multi-media exhibition that visualizes the essence of power and the notion of "besting" oneself, other artists or men in general. This exhibit features work of women artists including celebrity artist/juror and native Detroiter Suzy Lake.

Main Street and cool off and look over our July exhibit of original ceramic art.  The Clay Gallery offers the broadest range of original pottery as well as  decorative and sculptural ceramic works that you'll find in the Art Fair, and it's all the work of our 20 local artist members.  Not only does our gallery show exceptional ceramic art, but our prices also will be very competitive by Art Fair or any other standard.

Meet & Great Artist in Residence:  Jamea Richmond Edwards   
Edwards' work is absolutely exquisite, as a combination of illustration and collage on paper.  She primarily paints women and is influenced by childhood memories and the complex lives of the women in her life.  She is a preparing for three upcoming big exhibitions on the East coast in the Fall, including the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, Galerie Myrtis in Maryland, and the Delaware Art Museum.

Haroon Mirza Lecture and Tour
Haroon Mirza explores the relationships humans have with sound that occurs through objects, actions, and forces. He has captured the attention of the public and critics alike and was awarded the prestigious Northern Art Prize in 2010 and the 2011 Venice Biennale Silver Lion Award for the most promising young artist.

Anton Art Center  

It it's July, it must be time to prepare for the Anton Art Center's annual Christmas Market!  Artists and crafters working in all media are invited to apply.  There is no residency restriction.

 

Now in its 34th year, the market is a popular metro Detroit shopping destination with handmade items in all prices ranges.  Christmas Market is an excellent opportunity for artists and crafters to read a wide, diverse audience. 

 

There is no jury fee to be considered for Christmas Market.  A registration fee is required for artists accepted into the market:  $30 for members of the Anton Art Center, $40 for nonmembers.

 

Submission deadline September 7.

 

Ferndale Public Library 


Seeking Local Visual Artists and Photographers for Inqugural Exhibition  

Local artists and photographers seeking to make fresh connections with the community in vibrant, lively spaces will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Ferndale Public Library in its first group exhibition this coming September. The Ferndale Public Library Arts and Exhibitions Committee is seeking artists for an exhibition running from September 10 to October 5. Selected artists will have their works displayed in library community meeting room and atrium.
