Lone Star Liberty

Official Newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Texas
April 3, 2013

Greetings!

HUGE Success!

Liberty lovers from across Texas and from a broad range of political persuasions came together in Round Rock on March 16th to discuss issues important to Libertarians with regard to the Texas Legislature.

Panelists included grassroots activists like Terri Hall (Texans Uniting for Reform and Freedom - TURF) who works primarily on issues relating to your freedom to travel and property rights, and more established activists like Matt Simpson (Texas ALCU) who works on privacy and civil liberties issues.

Hosted by the Libertarian Party of Texas, this event demonstrated our diversity and ability to work with many different individuals and organizations on matters of personal liberty and truly limited government.

The discussion was moderated by our own Caroline Gorman (Travis County Chair/ SLEC Member) and, in addition to Terri Hall and Matt Simpson, participants included:
Cheyanne Weldon (Texas NORML),
Jeanette Moll (Texas Public Policy Foundation), and
Michael Cargill
(Central Texas Gunworks)

Launch 2014: Are you Ready??

But it's only April 2013...

We have work to do, folks!

Texas Flag- Blue Bonnets Now that we've had some time to breathe after our record setting 2012 election season, it's time to get back into the swing of things. The political climate is ripe for Libertarians to run AND WIN races for public office in Texas.

Applications for Nomination (a candidates first formal step to getting on the ballot) will be due at the end of this year. That means that NOW is the time for candidate recruitment and training. Once these applications are received by the party, we begin preparation for the convention process which begins in March 2014. (Click here to run for office.)

Nomination by Convention is the method by which we nominate our Libertarian candidates. Precinct, County, District, and State Chairmen host conventions where delegates (YOU!!) decide which Libertarians you want to represent you on the ballot in November. Convention dates are up in the air because of pending legislation. Official dates will be forthcoming.
(Click here to volunteer and get involved locally.)

Election Day 2014 will be here before we know it. Take action now to build you local organization and become familiar with the process.

Know your Power, and USE IT!!

Have you Renewed you Membership?

Our growing Libertarian organization here in Texas is funded entirely by the generous donations of our supporters. If you haven't done so already...

Texas Tech University Officials Announce Opening of Free Market Institute

"The new institute [is] headed by Benjamin Powell, who is also a senior fellow at the Independent Institute, newspaper columnist and a visiting professor in the Rawls College of Business. He and Robert Lawson, co-author of the Economic Freedom of the World Annual Report, will make remarks during the opening.

"Funded by a $4 million gift, Texas Tech University officials [have announced] the opening of the new Free Market Institute designed to research and educate students, the Lubbock community and the nation on the benefits of free-market economics.

"Powell said the $4 million came from an anonymous West Texas cattle rancher."

Libertarian, Jaime O. Perez is running for
Mayor of El Paso, Texas

A self-described 'Libertarian before he knew there was such a thing', he recently shared his vision, mission and values in a Mayoral debate at the University of Texas - El Paso.

Mr. Perez said, "I have a vision of a world in which everyone who wants to make a living, feed and educate their family can do so. My Mission is to promote a local government that minimizes restrictions on free enterprise as a means of creating jobs and building wealth."

He ended his comment with his value set, "Individual Liberty, Respect for Rule of Law and Dignity and Kindness Toward All."

His campaign gained traction among Liberty minded folks and fiscally responsible voters. His website
www.JaimeforElPaso.com includes a number of policy positions that he believes promote Liberty in a pragmatic way and a number of videos are posted in his Facebook page.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Perez said, "All politics is local. We may not be able to effectively influence federal or even state policy but we can take back our communities, one city at a time."

Message from the Chair

Fellow Texas Libertarians,

We need an Executive Director, a full time staff member to serve our slate of Libertarian candidates and local leaders throughout the 2014 election cycle.  This cannot happen without your support.

Pat Dixon Our state committee has made the hiring of an executive director a goal to be achieved by June.  We have several excellent candidates to choose from.  What we don't have is the money to pay them.

Please join the "Launch 2014"
campaign and become a member of the Libertarian party of Texas this year.  Our only source of financial support is from people like you.
