A Parent's Guide To Biomarkers For Autism
Dr. Laura Hewitson, Director of Research at The Johnson Center
There is a lot of interest in the development of a biomarker for autism that could predict autism risk, assist in diagnosis, or even provide targets for possible treatment options. This presentation will walk you through the status of current biomarker research, provide realistic assessments of how biomarkers could be used clinically, and address some of the ethical and social implications. Tell us what you think: Autism Jobs Survey
Later this year we are launching a new initiative as part of our ongoing commitment to individuals on the spectrum of all ages. We are building Autism Jobs - a new resource focused on employment and transition - and we need your input. Take our brief survey and tell us what you would like to see.  Take the Autism Jobs Survey

From the Director:
edelson

I would like to thank the staff at the Autism Research Institute for their hard work and dedication to improve the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. This first quarter of 2013 has been a productive one in setting up new initiatives and projects. This critical work is as important as ever with this morning's announcement from the CDC about a new survey that suggests autism may affect as many as 1 in 50 children.

Last month we published the new hardcover book, Nutritional Supplements for Autistic Spectrum Disorders, written by Jon Pangborn, Ph.D., and there has already been much buzz in the community about this landmark book. You can learn more about it below.

I will be co-chairing a three-day autism conference in Moscow from April 18 to 20. Several U.S. speakers will also be joining me, including Drs. Cindy Schneider, Robert Naviaux, Mitchell Taubman, and Catherine Crowley, as well as Vicki Kobliner, MS RD. If you live in Russia or have plans to travel to eastern Europe next month, join us for this ground-breaking conference.

Note: Next month is Autism Awareness Month, and we will have much more to share with you in our next e-newsletter. Watch for it around April 1st.

Growing and Changing: ARI at the UN & in Moscow, Plus a New Online Education Hub
Late last year we promised to introduce a new era at ARI with more online learning opportunities and a shifting focus in our face-to-face events toward smaller, targeted agendas. We are working hard toward those goals and are happy to share updates on three exciting events set for the weeks to come:
  • On April 2, World Autism Awareness Day, ARI will co-sponsor a panel discussion at the United Nations with The Miracle Project.
  • In mid-April, ARI will host its annual invitational Think Tank to discuss issues related to promising treatments.
  • In late-April, ARI Director Steve Edelson is traveling with US experts to Moscow to co-chair a three-day autism conference

elearnNew Webinar Hub Coming in April
Next month we will also launch an exciting new educational gateway - our new webinar hub - offering free live and archived learning events. The click-and-go interface will include continuing education for professionals, and represents our first steps toward our commitment to help more families and serve our community better by focusing on providing online education for parents and professionals alike.

We hope everyone has the opportunity to join us in one of these exciting new initiatives. We welcome your input - please share your thoughts through our Facebook page on what you as a member of this community feel we can provide to help ensure that all people with autism have the opportunity to lead a happy, healthy, and productive life.

puzzle Last summer, at the age of 2 , our daughter Isabelle was diagnosed with Autism. As you can imagine, the past year has been filled with a wave of emotions.  We have experienced so much happiness, love and laughter, coupled with an abundant amount of sadness, fear and devastation. Through countless hours of therapy and truly amazing therapists, Isabelle has made great progress and continues to do so.  She works so hard to overcome her obstacles and we have learned how to celebrate every one of her accomplishments, no matter how small.  Her beautiful smile and loving disposition is what gives us the strength to continue this journey.  We feel blessed and honored to be her parents.  With the generosity of my wonderful co-workers and my company, we raised $1000 in only a few weeks!

Dr. Jon Pangborn, a biochemist and a certified clinical nutritionist (and a longtime friend of ARI), has written a book describing the many supplements that might be useful for people with ASD--and he has graciously donated all proceeds from the book to ARI.

What experts are saying:

baker

Sidney MacDonald Baker, M.D.

"Jon Pangborn, PhD took hold of questions - and then answers -about biomedical options for individuals caught in the autism epidemic three decades ago. He grasped the subject with a biochemist's brain, a parent's heart, a determined hand, and the steady, literate help of his wife Chris. In your hand this book is a treasure of common sense and empowering clarification."

herbert

Martha Herbert, M.D., Ph.D.

"Science has found many mechanisms whereby nutritional supplementation for autism spectrum and the health consequences of environmental insults can make a meaningful difference for people in need, and Dr. Pangborn has made a unique and valuable contribution by converting his decades of rich knowledge and chemical expertise into practical advice that empowers the reader to make informed, thoughtful choices."

Jill James, Ph.D.

"Dr. Pangborn has focused his wealth of personal experience and knowledge into a step-by-step 'how to' and 'how much' program for managing nutritional supplementation in the context of other environmental exposures. Parents will find this an invaluable resource for optimizing metabolic health in their children with autism."
