EAP Celebrates Fifth Anniversary and Catches Up with Alumni
|
To celebrate its fifth year, members of the Emerging Athletes Program Task Force decided to check in with some of the program's past participants for feedback on their EAP experience and updates on their equestrian progress.
Henley Adkins of Moorpark, CA began her EAP journey in 2010 -
In 2010 I did Level I. In 2011 I did Levels I, II, and III (now known as the National Training Session).
I saw EAP as an opportunity to be able to train with great horse people like Melanie Smith Taylor, whom I had always admired.
I expected to gain a fresh perspective on riding and horsemanship from a whole new group of trainers.
I not only improved my riding, I improved my overall horsemanship knowledge and skills and made new lifetime friends in the process.
I have continued to show in the Big Eq classes such as the Talent Search, Maclay, and WCE. I have also been given the opportunity to ride and train some amazing horses, which I learn from every day. I competed over fences at the IEA National Finals in Syracuse this April with my Elvenstar High School Team and in the fall of 2013, I will be attending Kansas State University on a riding scholarship.
A few of my riding highlights since EAP include:
- Reserve Champion of the Ronnie Mutch Equitation Championship at HITS Thermal in 2012
- Fourth place overall in the CPHA Jr. Medal Final 2012
- Watching Meg O'Mara win the USEF Hunt Seat Medal in 2012 on Vancouver, the horse that I trained
- The honor of winning the USHJA's nomination for the USEF Youth Sportsmanship Award in 2012
- Being a finalist for the USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year Award also in 2012.
Thanks! EAP has opened doors for me as a catch rider. It has also given me techniques that I have brought home with me in training my own horses.
Cori Cromwell of Sedalia, CO started EAP in 2011 -
I participated in EAP in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, I made it to the National Training Session.
I decided to apply to EAP because I believe I fit in with the values of the program. The idea that you do not need world class horses or piles of money really stood out to me. I expected to learn to ride better from the clinicians, but I learned so much more. I benefited from the horsemanship, an area in which I believe many young riders lack. Some of the most important things I learned from EAP were the little tips from Karen Golding. She has many good tricks for everyday tasks using household items like vinegar.
Being a National Finalist has had a huge influence on my riding career. It has given me much attention from NCAA teams. This April, I will be signing with the New Mexico State equestrian team. I know that EAP has had a huge impact on my recruitment from these equestrian teams. The coaches look for teamwork and sportsmanship and EAP teaches exactly that. I learned the importance of a valuable work ethic and attention to detail from my clinicians.
I look forward to contributing to the team with all the knowledge EAP has given me.
