News at a Glance
- You can obtain a library card from St. Mary's College of Maryland or College of Southern Maryland at any branch through September 24.
- Homeschooled students and parents, find out how to best use your library resources at Leonardtown at 2 p.m. on September 26.
- St. Mary's College Spanish students are conducting help sessions for Spanish speakers at the Lexington Park branch to assist them with reading English documents. The next session will be September 24 from 6-8 p.m.
- Lexington Park's landscaping and parking lot got "spruced" up, thanks to employees of Community Bank of Tri-County who were participating in the United Way Day of Caring.

King Peggy packed the meeting room at Lexington Park where she shared her story and signed copies of her book, King Peggy, this year's One Maryland One Book title.

Lexington Park now open on Sundays, 1-5 pm
Board of Library Trustees, County Commissioners and Library Director Kathleen Reif cut the ribbon on September 8 to re-open the doors of the Lexington Park library once again on Sundays. The library had 373 visitors walk through the door checking out 899 items on September 8. Lexington Park is the only library in Southern Maryland open on Sundays.

King Peggy packed the room
King Peggy, author and subject of this year's selection for the One Maryland One Book state-wide read, packed the meeting room at Lexington Park where she shared her story and signed copies of her book.
A special thanks goes to Pastor Mitch Watney and the Good Samaritan Lutheran Church for allowing us to borrow additional chairs for the program.
Upcoming programs: Book Discussions: Monday, October 7, 7 pm, Charlotte Hall Thursday, October 17, 7 pm, Leonardtown Storytelling at its Best! Professional storyteller Janice Curtis Greene will bring the themes of King Peggy to life with her dynamic original stories. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2 pm, Lexington Park
Copies of the book, books on CDs, and Playaways are available at the libraries. The book can also be downloaded as an eBook and an audio book. Copies have also be left in public places around the county. If found, read it, then pass it on or leave it for someone else to find. Follow the instructions on the front cover to be entered in a drawing for a Kindle.
OMOB is a program of the Maryland Humanities Council and takes place annually in September and October.

Lexington Park gets spruced up
Thanks to these employees of the Community Bank of Tri-County, Lexington Park has a fresh look. These volunteers spread new mulch in the beds and picked up litter in the parking lot and around the building as part of the United Way Day of Caring. College library cards available at branches You can obtain a library card for St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM) and/or College of Southern Maryland (CSM) at any of the three branches until September 24 as part of the Library Card Exchange program between the colleges and libraries.
The benefit of having these cards:
- Late evening hours Sunday-Wednesday until 1 a.m. at SMCM
- DVDs including lots of foreign films
- Academic books and journals including many online
- Southern Maryland Studies Center Research Collection at the CSM La Plata Campus.

Help with English Documents for Spanish speakers
Spanish students from St. Mary's College will be available in the meeting room at Lexington Park to help Spanish speakers read English documents. The students will help translate forms, applications, school flyers, children's homework assignments and more. The libraries are participating in Read for the Record on October 3. The children's book, Otis by Loren Long, will be read by children and adults all across the country on October 3 to support the day when every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Last year 2.3 million people participated in the Read for the Record campaign.
Build It!
What can children build with a cardboard box and duct tape? The possibilities are endless. They only need to bring their imagination and we supply the rest.

Computer Classes
Certificate of Attendance now being issued
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to those adults who attend the basic computer series (Introduction to computers, Windows, Internet and email) or the Microsoft Office 2010 series (Introduction to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher). Job seekers can use this certificate to show JobSource or potential employers that they have attended the classes. A Certificate of Attendance will also be issued for individual computer classes.
