School is a Safe Haven
Letter from the Executive Director

I always loved going back to school. It was a place where I felt confident and appreciated the structure of the classroom. School is a safe place for many students. It's the one place they know they can count on getting breakfast and lunch. Children's Lunchbox, a program that feeds kids estimated that 18,000 children in Anchorage live in poverty. That's 35% of the students in ASD. They live in poverty and their families rely heavily on programs like Children's Lunchbox to make sure their kids get breakfast and lunch.

School is a place where adults care and put kids' needs first. A place that is warm. So many kids are moving from home to home, school to school and missing endless days of school which negatively impacts their ability to keep pace with other kids.

AWAIC works closely with the Anchorage School District's Child in Transition or Title 1 program to make sure our kids get to school. We work with moms to determine if it is safe for their little ones to continue at the same school. CIT provides transportation to and from school. Some of those bus rides take kids all the way back to the bus barn to another bus and they can spend countless hours waiting to get to school. Oftentimes they're working on less sleep than most adults and struggle to get by in the classroom.

But school is a safe haven; there is normalcy and stability there.

Without resources like Children's Lunchbox and Child in Transition these most vulnerable of children wouldn't get fed, wouldn't have access to the consistency and stability of their classrooms. I'm incredibly grateful for the work they, many other programs, teachers and school staff do to help our kids at AWAIC and throughout our community.

Best,

Suzi

Seeking School Supplies

Back to school time is here, and we are looking for back to school supplies for children in shelter.  Every child should be able to attend their first day of school with the right tools.  We are in need of basic school supplies like markers, notebooks, lined paper, pens, erasers, pencil holders, pencil sharpeners, glue, scissors, calculators, rulers, and most importantly...Backpacks!  Backpacks are something children are in need of year round.  If you have any questions about an item to donate, please contact AWAIC at 279-9585 and ask for a member of the children's team.  We look forward to hearing from you and thank you again for your help...Every donation makes a difference!
