Improving Quality Together - a new language for Wales

If you work in NHS Wales, then you need to know about Improving Quality Together. Already, 3,500 NHS Wales staff have completed the introductory bronze level - and you are invited to join them!

So, what is IQT? It’s the national learning programme for all NHS Wales staff and contractors. It provides a common language and consistent approach to improving the quality of services in NHS organisations across Wales, so wherever you work and whoever you are working with, you will find it easier to overcome challenges in your daily work.
Improving Quality Together

All staff in NHS Wales are invited to take part in Improving Quality Together

Improving Quality Together will help you improve the way you work to help you offer event better care for your patients and service users. It will also help you create a better working environment, making your life at work less stressful and more fulfilling.

There are three levels in the programme - bronze, silver and gold - and all NHS Wales staff are encouraged to take part, starting with doing the bronze level. It’s easy to access, you can do it online in less than two hours, and it’s the perfect way to start making a real difference to your patients and your workplace.

Cleaner operating theatres leads to safer care

Using the tools and techniques explored in Improving Quality Together, theatres in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, are cleaner, protecting patients from potentially harmful infections.

As part of the work to reduce surgical site infections, Helen Dinham, Theatre Manager, Royal Gwent Hospital, identified a need to achieve higher levels of cleaning compliance.

“Improving Quality Together helped me look at exactly what the problem was and not just assume I knew what it was,” says Helen in a video interview.

The outcome of the project was 100 per cent compliance, meaning all required cleaning had been completed to the necessary standard.

Making sure asthma patients get the right medicines

Improving Quality Together has helped pharmacy staff ensure patients receive the correct dosages of drugs to treat asthma and other respiratory problems. Between 10 and 25 per cent of patients attending clinics have had their dosage reduced every month, protecting them from possible harm caused by inappropriate levels of medication.

Jackie Reynolds, Medicines Management Pharmacist, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, ran a pilot project with a GP practice to ensure patients were prescribed the correct dosages. Using the skills and techniques that are part of Improving Quality Together, she was able to identify the key barriers to correct prescribing.

In a video interview, Jackie says, “The silver level of Improving Quality Together brings together a whole range of quality improvement methods under one umbrella. It shows you how to use those effectively to achieve change.”
