Greetings!
Don't be disheartened if getting the boss on board with sustainability is still a challenge.
15 Ideas your CEO Can't Resist
A recent article by Toby Webb, Founder of Ethical Corporation, provides 15 ideas that your CEO won't be able to resist. Here are 5 of the bolder suggestions:
- Laying a breadcrumb trail - finding smart ways to plant seeds that may take a while to take root, but will appear like their plan.
- Using family - never underestimate the power our children have on our priorities at work and home
- Linking sustainability with where they are going next - sustainability is a transferable knowledge and skill set, the more they know in this job, will help them in the next
- Evoking the competitive spirit - Webb says that CEOs like to keep up with their peers, so show them how
- Using a bucket of cold water - shock tactics can be risky, but credible voices that tell the truth about where your company ranks on the "best practice" scale can generate creative tension toward sustainability
You can check out the remaining insights from Toby here.
Quick Fixes or Meaningful Change?
However, you might be cynical of Toby's list. It might look like a list of quick fixes. They never work. We know that.
But I don't think it is. I think it is part of a "continual development of awareness and the capacity of choose", something that Senge, Scharmer and others talk about in the book Presence.
Near the end of the book they reflect on how we are emerging from the "freezing of (our) deeper capacities". They suggest that old fashioned thinking, like capitalism, trapped us in a system where we became instruments of a "will" not our own. They think that unknowingly, we have lost our sense of autonomy, our will and our real ability to make choices. We are not consciously competent at living within a system where the economy, the environment and society are on equal footing.
The authors contend that a "call to service" and "call to cultivation" are the way forward. We can't shift these big unsustainable systems overnight they say; but we can commit to the continual development of awareness and the capacity to choose.
That is our job; yours and mine. It matters.
