Bowdoin's Endowment Returns 10.9 Percent


The Bowdoin College endowment generated an investment return of 10.9 percent for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2024, increasing its value by $161 million to a total of $2.6 billion. Nearly half of the endowment is restricted by donors for the support of student financial aid, with distributions accounting this year for approximately 78 percent of the College’s $66.7 million financial aid budget.

Parents and families showed up for their students en masse amid a beautiful fall weekend full of activity and togetherness. Against a backdrop of colorful fall foliage and with unseasonably warm weather, students showed their families and friends around campus to give them a glimpse of what life is like at Bowdoin.

The annual event, part of Family Weekend, recognizes Bowdoin's highest-achieving students—those with grade-point averages in the top twenty percent of their class. President Safa Zaki delivered remarks, as did Yeo Bondar '27 and Professor of Education Doris Santoro.

Recipients of summer fellowships ringed the Quad during Family Weekend with information-packed posters highlighting faculty-advised student work spanning the curriculum.

The Association of Bowdoin Latinx Alumni (ABLA) had a busy October—holding meetings, receptions, and even a cooking demonstration.

Bowdoin Community, First Parish Church Remember MLK Visit 


The Bowdoin community joined with First Parish Church in Brunswick for a Sunday service dedicated to honor the legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of his visit.


Artist Carrie Mae Weems H'12 Receives National Medal from White House


Carrie Mae Weems, a 2012 Bowdoin honorary degree recipient and one of America's most influential contemporary artists, went to the White House to receive a National Medal of Arts from President Biden.

NESCAC Championships

A late-season push by the men’s soccer team resulted in a 2-2 tie in the regular season finale against Tufts on Tuesday, clinching the final playoff spot in the conference tournament for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin makes a return trip to Medford, Mass., on Saturday for a NESCAC quarterfinal rematch with the Jumbos, at 1:30 p.m. The Bowdoin cross-country team is set to host the NESCAC Championship meet on Saturday for the first time since 2012. The women’s meet is set for 11:00 a.m. with the men to follow at noon. Complete information can be found at the championship webpage. 

 

Sailing Duo Qualifies for Nationals

For the first time in program history, Bowdoin has qualified two sailors for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Singlehanded Nationals. Sophomores Michelangelo Vecchio and Rebecca Schill earned at-large selections to compete on the national stage in Saint Petersburg, Florida, November 9–10. Vecchio is the first Bowdoin sailor ever to qualify for the Open Singlehanded Nationals, while Schill becomes the second Polar Bear to qualify for the Women's Singlehanded Nationals. CBB Chase Begins Saturday at Bates

The Bowdoin football team will begin defense of its CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) title on Saturday when they head to Bates to take on the Bobcats in the 126th meeting between the long-standing rivals, dating back to 1889. Bowdoin earned the CBB crown last fall and will look to repeat for the first time since winning three straight between 2006­ and 2008. Fans can watch the game live on the Northeast Sports Network or on radio locally and online at WCME 99.5 FM/900 AM

 

Winter Sports Schedules

Practices are already underway for Bowdoin winter sports teams, with contests beginning Friday, November 14. Full winter sports schedules, as well as a composite calendar, can be found at GoUBears.com.

Notable Photography Collection Gifted to Museum of Art


David and Gail Mixer have gifted to the Bowdoin College Museum of Art a collection of more than 230 historic and contemporary photographs from around the world. The collection focuses on artists—whether self-portraits or portraits of other artists—and includes pieces by such important figures as Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Trude Fleischmann, Roni Horn, Lotte Jacobi, and Gillian Wearing, among many others.
