Homecoming 2024: A Weekend to Remember

Beautiful fall weather set the scene for Homecoming Weekend 2024 as returning Polar Bears enjoyed Harvestfest, athletic events, affinity gatherings, a celebration of 200 years of economics at Bowdoin, and more.


Two Hundred Years and Counting: Economics at Bowdoin Celebrates Major Milestone


Alumni gathered on campus for

Homecoming Weekend had the chance to celebrate a happy anniversary as well—two centuries of economics at the College.

“The economics department has been central to the prestige and reputation of Bowdoin College for the past two hundred years,” said William D. Shipman Professor of Economics Zorina Khan (right), recognizing the milestone in her Homecoming Weekend keynote lecture, “1824 and All That: How Bowdoin Economics Made History.”

Bowdoin Secures Major Grant for AI Teaching and Learning Initiative 


The three-year, $250,000 award is funding a variety of efforts to equip faculty and staff with the knowledge and skills to more fully understand the applications, implications, and potential of AI in the classroom.

Fall Sports Update


With the passing of Homecoming Weekend, Bowdoin fall sports teams have entered the homestretch of their schedules. The football team came away with a victory on Homecoming Saturday, defeating Hamilton for the third straight year, 28-21. Meanwhile, in a historic performance, first-year women’s golfer Emily Renoff set numerous program records in becoming the first Polar Bear to ever win the prestigious Williams Invitational at Taconic Golf Club. Winter Sports Schedules


The ice is down at Watson Arena, and winter sports are just around the corner as practices begin the final week of October. You can visit the calendar page on the Bowdoin Athletics website for a complete listing of winter sports game schedules. Action begins on Friday and Saturday, November 15–16.

Slideshow: Student Night at the Museum


This fall's Student Night as the Museum provided students an opportunity to explore the Museum of Art, including the Abigail DeVille: In the Fullness of Time exhibition. Later, many students continued the theme by taking in a showing of the film Night at the Museum on the Quad.

Lessons Learned and Constructive Dialogues: Conversations around Our Political Climate


The Office of Inclusion and Diversity is presenting a number of guest speakers to deliver talks this fall on topics around this country’s political climate, political dialogues on college campuses, and our encounters with misinformation and how we deal with them, among others. Each event is followed by a community dinner to provide talk attendees from campus and beyond the opportunity to share their perspectives and continue the conversation.

Answer: A Nice Mention on National Television


A recent "Final Jeopardy" question in the category of nineteenth-century Americans asked Jeopardy! contestants, "Among those who attended his 1864 funeral were Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and Franklin Pierce." The answer, of course is Nathaniel Hawthorne. No one got it right, so host Ken Jennings explained: "It was a writer, as some of you knew, but in fact, Franklin Pierce had been the Bowdoin College schoolmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne."
