A Note From Your First Grade Teachers
First Grade Connections

Dear First Grade Families,

Time flies! Who can believe we are in the third trimester of first grade. It seems like yesterday we were meeting your children for the first time. This last trimester of school is a very exciting time. We are really emphasizing that the students are almost in second grade and that we are expecting 'almost' second grade work and behavior. They seem up for the challenge. We are really excited about all of the great field trips we have planned.

Thank you to everyone who came with us to the HEAL Project's School Farm and to those that have already signed on to drive/chaperone in the future. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities please use the track it forward site to sign up. Lastly, we will be planting starters for our first grade farmers' market. If you are interested in helping us to maintain the garden please let us know.

What We Have Been Learning
Writing 

In Writing, we have been busy writing All-About Books! Topics have included... 

-All About Sea Crest
-All About Science
-All About Birds
-All About Dogs
-All About Flowers

Students are working with their writing partners to map out their pages and anticipate questions potential readers who know nothing about their topic could have. We are continuing to practice writing with punctuation, capitals and rereading our writing to make sure it makes sense. 
Guest Speakers

Farmer John Muller (Farmer John's Pumpkins and Daylight Farm) came in to speak about his lifelong career as a farmer in Half Moon Bay. The students asked him lots of great questions and specifically about his daily schedule, so they could compare it to a non-farming (parent) work schedule.  
Willa's mom, Joan came in to speak with Room 8. She presented about Julia Butterfly Hill, an activist who lived in a tree for 2 years to protest the clearcutting that was happening in the redwood forrest. Joan enlisted help from first graders to save trees, prevent waste and stand up for what they believe. The presentation ended with tree hugging!
Character Education

We are continuing our study on Multiple Intelligences. We learned about what it means to be SELF SMART. Self Smart means that you know yourself well. You know how you feel, what you think and even what you dream. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You think of good goals for yourself. If you are self smart you can make good choices and not be influenced by other people telling you what to do.
Social Studies

To emphasize what a unique agricultural community we live in, the students completed a mapping assignment. First, they found their houses on a map of the coast and then placed themselves on the map in relation to the farm(s) that they are closest to. They were delighted to see how many farms were in such a small area.

Please let us know if you have any questions. If your first grader would like to use Raz Kids for their reading homework they are welcome to. We are excited about this new learning tool! Have fun!

Ask Your Child About

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions and activities can help you get started.

  • Using small objects like Cheerios or buttons, have your first grader count, add and subtract numbers to 20. Make sure they are putting them in groups of 10's and adding on.
  • Read a book and make 'text to self' connections
  • Let's brainstorm some words that are in the -at family, -it family, -ot family (words that rhyme with cat, pit and pot)
  • What are you an expert on? What can you write an 'All About Book' about?
  • What makes a person body smart? self smart?
