Aristophanes: The Father of Comedy

a presentation by Mark Perlberg

the third event of this season's

Dramalogue

Talking Theatre!

January 13, 2015 - Aristophanes kept fifth-century Greeks in stitches with comedies that combined political humor and poetry with farce, bawdiness, and slapstick. Mark Perlberg examines his work in Aristophanes: The Father of Comedy at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre on February 3 (2pm and 7pm), the third of six programs in Palm Beach Dramaworks' popular series, Dramalogue - Talking Theatre! Introduced last season, Dramalogue explores all aspects of theatre in conversations with or about the industry's top professionals and master artists.

Aristophanes wrote at least 36 plays, 11 of which survive. Perlberg will discuss how Aristophanes' works were created and presented, the politics of the time, and why the plays still speak to today's audiences. The presentation includes scene readings by professional actors, video clips, and will be followed by a Q&A.

The series continues on February 17 with Sam Shepard: The Bard of Lost Souls, hosted by J. Barry Lewis, PBD resident director. Lewis will direct the acclaimed playwright's Pulitzer Prize-winning Buried Child later in the season. He returns again on March 17 with a presentation on one of musical theatre's great partnerships, Rodgers & Hart: Singing to a Different Tune. The program will include live music. The series concludes on April 7 with Actors' Roundtable: Actors Unscripted, a discussion hosted by Sheryl Flatow that features four talented local actors - Cliff Burgess, Dennis Creaghan, Elizabeth Dimon, and Margery Lowe - who will talk about their craft and the realities of making a living in theatre.

Mark Perlberg is the executive producer of Dramalogue, which is sponsored by Nancy and Jay Parker. Presentations may include videos clips and/or scene readings. Audiences are invited to participate in a Q&A at the conclusion of each event.

All programs are at 2pm and 7pm on Tuesdays.

Individual tickets are $20.
