Possibly Napa's Greatest Vintage. A Find Like This Does Not Come Around That Often The 2007 vintage for Napa Cabernet stands on it's own. The vintage is spectacular. Parker gave the vintage the highest rating he has ever given a Napa Cab vintage. Wine Spectator decalred 2007 the "vintage of the decade" and gave the vintage 99 pts, the highest they have ever given a Napa Cab vintage. Oddly enough, I was chatting with one of my favorite Oregon Pinot producers who shared with that there was a tiny husband and wife team (Craig and Kate Boyle Macdonald) on Atlas Peak who were making insane Cabernet and that I had to check it out and the hunt was on. Production is only 125 cases a year (five barrel production) and Craig is a native New Englander and wanted to have representation in the region and he was very kind to give us a tiny allocation of his Cabernet gold and I mean gold. The wine is superb and reminds me of Araujo. They have done an incredible job balancing huge fruit with French oak. A Cabernet for the discriminating palate but at an extremely affordable price when compared to Napa's finest Cabs. This wine will definitely increase in price over the next coming years because it is do damn good. I have twenty years experience with the finest Napa Cabs and this house is definitely on the up. Craig has decided not to submit his wines to media outlets and tasting competitions because they simply make so little Cab. When they do these wines will double in price. The Macdonald's planted their vineyard on the east slope of the Mt George Range in Napa. They planted 3800 vines per acre which is about three times the norm. Denser planting results in each vine having to fight to produce fruit, much lower yields and grapes that are smaller, thicker skinned and perfect for making big red wine. Yield per vine is tiny, only 2.5 lbs per vine. This all results in awesome concentration occurring naturally. Craig has very kindly given us some of his 2007 Boyle Cabernet Cabernet to offer to only our best customers. The wine was aged for 28 months in French oak and a further period bottle aging prior to release. The result is a great 2007 Napa Cabernet at any price. Please note that there is vely little 2007 Napa Cab to be had. Wines have sold out. Current offerings are 2009.
