FINE WINE DUMP

2009 PRIDE MOUNTAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON
NAPA VALLEY / SONOMA VALLEY, CA

04.17.2012

Greetings!

25 minutes west of St. Helena, Pride Mountain Vineyards produces highly-rated wines from its CA estate on the Napa / Sonoma county line. In my opinion, Pride Mtn is modestly priced considering its esteemed reputation and commitment to quality. Absolutely an excellent trophy wine for your dollar considering it's highly allocated in TX.

I also suggest making Pride Mtn a priority stop on your next CA wine country visit. Buy a couple bottles in Pride's tasting room and dining on the picnic tables on the mountain top. Unbelievable wine w/ an incredible view!

FYI - a little market news. If you're a devout cab drinker, I recommend investing in 09 and previous vintages. With 2 'short' vintages in a row (10 & 11), extremely high demand for CA cab, and rising inflation...Napa / Sonoma cab prices will increase over the next 2-3 years. The pendulum is unfortunately swinging away from a buyer's market in TX and across the US.

Please reach-out for me if you have questions, etc. As always, there's a 3-bottle minimum per wine...w/ a 6-bottle minimum purchase.

Cheers!

WB

09 PRIDE MOUNTAIN Cabernet Sauvignon
$195 for 3 bottles ($65 ea.)
67% Napa, 33% Sonoma
85% cab sauv, 11% merlot, 4% petit verdot
Not yet rated
The 2009 vintage was a classic one for Cabernet on top of the mountain, producing a wine of pure varietal character, suppleness on the mid-palate and age-worthy structure and intensity. Warm, sunny summer weather met with a cooling period during September that pushed our harvest back to the last two weeks of October and into November, with the last Cabernet grapes harvested on November 3rd. Each of the 11 separate blocks that contribute to this wine were picked and fermented separately and after aging in French oak barrels for 19 months, the final cuvée was assembled in June and bottled in July. Particularly notable in this vintage is that all 11 lots were truly fantastic. Notes of blackberry, ripe plum, black tea, cassis and dark chocolate create an intriguing aromatic interplay, while the opaque, blue-black color, voluptuous mouthfeel and natural acidity balance the wine's mountain tannins, creating a wine with no sharp edges. - Winemaker Notes
BIG LIST
The BIG LIST is an updated inventory of in-stock wines. There's a 3-bottle minimum per wine...w/ a 6-bottle minimum purchase. All bottles are 750ml unless otherwise specified.

CHARDONNAY

08 ARROWOOD Russian River Valley

$45 for 3 bottles ($15 ea.)

A classic CA big-boy chard: 100% malo, 100% barrel fermented w/ 15.4% alcohol. Most of my chard drinkers want big fruit, butter & oak. Arrowood absolutely delivers on all fronts. Getting low...have less than 2 cases in-stock at this price.

10 CAKEBREAD CELLARS Napa Valley

91 W&S

10 FERRARI CARANO Sonoma County

09 STONESTREET Broken Road Alexander Mountain Estate

$105 for 3 bottles ($35 ea.)

92+ IWC, 92 WA

I believe Tanzer's notes are spot-on: "Bright straw-yellow. Nuanced nose offers peach, apricot, lime and anise. Supple and gently fruity, with a glyceral quality leavened by bright acidity. Became silkier with air but without losing its edge of acidity."

WHITE BLENDS
10 PINE RIDGE Chenin Blanc - Viognier
$27.75 for 3 bottles ($9.25 ea.)
90 WA
Just moved into the 10 vintage. Parker scores it 90 pts...again. Great spring / summer pour.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
09 ATALON Napa Valley
$82.50 for 3 bottles ($27.50 ea.)
90 WA
Atalon is French word for 'benchmark'. Big black cherry fruit with smooth tannins. I first tasted this years ago at Cardinale's Napa tasting room...and is a fraction of the price.

08 CAKEBREAD CELLARS Napa Valley

$186 for 3 bottles ($62 ea.)

90 WS, 90 WA

08 CHIMNEY ROCK Stags Leap District
$168 for bottles ($56 bottle)

I enjoy all CR wines...& believe SLD is a great value considering its craftsmanship & quality.

05 CLOS DU VAL Stags Leap District

$150 for 3 bottles ($50 ea.)
94 WE, 93 W&S
13.5% alcohol on the SLD. Truly made in the old-world French style...w/ distinct SLD characteristics. One of my in-stock favorites. Suggested retail = $75

07 HESS COLLECTION Mt. Veeder

$75 for 3 bottles ($25 ea.)

92 WE, 88 IWC

Fantastic Mt. Veeder juice. 3 bottles at this price in-stock. Suggested Retail = $48.

07 FREEMARK ABBEY Napa Valley

$75 for 3 bottles ($25 ea.)

93 WE, 92 W&S

Spicy & medium-full bodied w/ roasted herbs, dark cherries and white chocolate. 07 is considered by most to be a great Napa vintage. Needs to breathe if drinking now, or can easily lay down for another 5-10 years. Strongly recommend!

09 PLUMPJACK Oakville Estate

$247.50 for 3 bottles ($82.50 ea.)

94+ WA

One of Napa's most highly-acclaimed wines. Strongly suggest.

08 RUBICON Cask Napa Valley

$180 for 3 bottles ($60 ea.)

94 WE

Herb-infused blackberry & cherry fruit. More modernistic in my opinion while maintaining balance. Can lay down...but ready to drink now.

06 SILVER OAK Alexander Valley

$144 for 3 bottles ($48 ea.)

92 WE

Just a few bottles in-stock at this price. Hard to find Silver Oak under $50.

95 WE

Artemis is always good regardless of vintage. Wine Enthusiast agrees. Slam-dunk selection.

09 STAGS LEAP WINE CELLARS Hands of Time

$87 for 3 bottles ($29 ea.)

09 is mostly cab sauv.  (93% cab sauv, 7% merlot)  This vintage is a little like 'baby Artemis'. Amazing value for SLWC connoisseurs.

Smoking ratings from Parker & Enthusiast. Best Alexander Valley wine I've tasted. Mountain fruit offer fantastic balance & complexity.

07 WHITEHALL LANE Napa Valley

$78 for 3 bottles ($26 ea.)

WH is one of my Rutherford favs off Hwy 29. Lots of black cherry, cassis & dark chocolate. Medium tannins w/ spice-notes on the finish. Suggested retail = $40.

The most recent release from a top producer of zinfandel, chardonnay & pinot noir.

09 SEQUANA Santa Lucia Highlands
$78 for 3 bottles ($26 ea.)
"This is the third Sequana vintage for winemaker James MacPhail, who produces solely pinot noir under this Hess Collection-owned label. Cherry, a hint of bacon and tobacco leaf aromas with strawberry, cherry and tart rhubarb on the palate. A leaner style with pretty acidity." - San Francisco Chronicle

09 SOKOL BLOSSER Dundee Hills Willamette Valley
$78 for 3 bottles ($26 ea.)
90 WS
Suggested retail = $38. "Polished, refined and beautifully focused, offering guava-accented blackberry and floral flavors. Picks up a tobacco note as the finish lingers. Drink now through 2017..." - Wine Spectator
