Venture Up was conceived in Chamonix, France, home of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and gateway to Mt. Dolent, where the Swiss, Italian and French Alps meet.
In 1983 two American climbers were snowed in for days in their Chamonix chalet. T
hey decided to open an adventure company when they returned to the USA.
"What should we name it?" said David Lengyel. "Venture Up," said Teresa Shaw. During the ensuing months, company names were tossed back and forth among friends in Europe and the States. Guess which name won?
