Nighttime Collision During the Storm

in 2011 Chicago-Mackinac Race

by Glenn McCarthy, Commodore

While sailing in the 2011 Chicago-Mackinac Race, in an area fairly close to the WingNuts accident (see January 2012 LMSRF Newsletter) in the blinding rain, Jahazi, a J120, was on starboard tack, sailing downwind, sitting in second place in section.  She was struck on the port side in a T-bone collision and holed by Phoenix, a J109, who was on port tack, sailing downwind, in the worst of the storm.  It happened all so fast:  from the time Phoenix was seen as she wiped out, Jahazi attempted to avoid the collision, they collided, and they were blinded out by rain happened in as little as 6 to 8 seconds.  The colliding boat could not immediately be identified.

Jahazi was holed a few inches above the port waterline and the hole measured about 7" wide by 22" long.  Jahazi was able to take down all sails and stop water intrusion by stuffing the hole with sleeping bags.  They bailed the 50 buckets of water out that had come in.  After Jahazi was in control of the situation, which took a bit of time, they got on the radio to contact the other boat by describing the location of the collision.  Phoenix answered back.  Due to the volume of radio traffic concerning the WingNuts incident that was going on at the same time, they changed to another radio channel.

Phoenix radioed back to learn about Jahazi's damage and reported that they had no damage.  When Jahazi said they were on their way to Charlevoix, Phoenix indicated their plan to finish the race.  Phoenix did not know it until daylight, but their mast sheared at the deck line.  Jahazi filed a protest against Phoenix.  Phoenix admitted that they were not familiar with RRS 44.1(b) that requires a boat to retire when there is serious damage to either boat.  Phoenix was DSQ'd for this as well as the port/starboard rule.

Getting to the The Real Point Of This Story--Frank Giampoli, the owner of Jahazi, wishes to publicly thank another competitor who overheard the radio transmissions and immediately offered assistance to Jahazi.  That competitor was Here's Johnnie, a J105 owned by John Moore. Here's Johnnie offered to drop out of the race and follow Jahazi into Charlevoix. Jahazi turned down their assistance because they were no longer taking on water, however both boats remained in regular radio contact until Jahazi was safely docked.

Frank Giampoli wants to give a big shout out to what he considers a mark of good seamanship on behalf of the crew of Here's Johnnie. Thank you.

LMSRF Welcomes a NEW YACHT CLUB

This past September, the final steps were put in place by Dean Carlile to create the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Elks Yacht Club.  The club is located at 601 Riverview Drive, Benton Harbor, MI.  Its members are Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks members who organized a sub-unit that is the yacht club.  They charge a nominal fee for the additional yacht club membership.  They welcome guest visits and offer sponsorship to utilize the bar.

Their Commodore is Dean Carlile, Secretary is Jennifer Cox, and their LMSRF Representative is Jeff Alisch.

As you meet their members at events and races this year, be sure to congratulate them on starting a new Yacht Club.

2012 Strictly Sail Chicago

 by Gene T. McCarthy
Chicago's out of the water winter exposure to the sport of sailing was considered successful by attendees and dealers. Attendance was up compared to 2011. The number of "booths" was down slightly. However, this reduction made the show much more pleasant as the spacing made attendees feel good.

The show's major space user was Pinnacle Yachts displaying their 86' sloop, Ocean, black and beautiful. The boat had the keel and rudder removed to bring the body of the boat down near floor level. Long lines of people awaited their turns to go aboard and down below. The spacing along the north wall where the smallest "booths" were located felt good as there was more room due to fewer vendors. This permitted visitors to view the wares offered without their view being interrupted by others crushing past them.

Most major boat manufacturers and dealers were represented. Many yacht clubs and sailing clubs were present offering their services. The "best booth" award went to Chicago Yacht Club. Lake Michigan's major sailboat shipyards displayed their services as well the hardware manufacturers.

A feature of the Chicago show is the number of seminars held. These seminars cover everything from safety to maintenance and some describe what every sailor needs to go sailing. The show is a great opportunity to reacquaint with friends and fellow sailors.

US SAILING SAFETY AT SEA SEMINARS

The 2012 Chicago Mackinac Safety Regulations have added, "73. Safety at Sea Seminar - It is strongly recommended that at least 30% of the crew (including the skipper) have completed a US Sailing approved Safety at Sea Seminar within the 5 year period preceding the start of the race."

We encourage all sailors, regardless if they race, cruise or day sail to attend these one day sessions.  They are chock full of sage advice and focus on all sorts of issues you may have to deal with when you are away from emergency services and need to be self reliant.

2012 QUEEN'S CUP

This Year:  Milwaukee to South Haven

The South Shore Yacht Club hosted Queen's Cup is a great race on its own, with many crews using it as a tune-up for the Chicago-Mac race.  Why a tune-up?  The race starts around 6:00 pm and goes across the lake overnight to give experience with nighttime racing.  The prevailing winds commonly make it a reach fest, but it also has tactical conditions, with ever shifting and oscillating winds of varying speeds.  If you are from the Chicago area and have not done this race before, this is the year to give it a go.  Rumors have it that a feeder race from Waukegan may occur on June 24, the day after the Chicago to Waukegan race.  With this year's finish at South Haven, it makes it the shortest of trips ever back to Chicago on Sunday after the Queen's Cup race.

EVENTS AT SOUTH SHORE YACHT CLUB

Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29 - Shuttle buses will take you to West Marine, the Ale House (http://ale-house.com/, downtown Milwaukee, home of Louie's Last Regatta), and over to Milwaukee Summerfest (http://www.summerfest.com/).  This year there are special Queen's Cup rates with 4 nearby hotels (Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites and Comfort Inn) with 24 hour shuttle service to the club and back to the hotel available.

Thursday, June 28 - Queen's Cup Party - Outside cash grill and bar open 11-5 during the day.  Breakfast and Dinner specials inside the club. Under the tent in the evening, rock band, dancing , set price food and beverage - one of the best, if not the best - parties on the Lake.

Friday, June 29 - Outside cash grill and bar open 11-5 during the day.  Breakfast and Dinner specials inside the club.  Groppies Food Market will prepare gourmet sandwiches for crews that want something more than a PB&J for the race across.  http://www.ssyc.org/

EVENTS AT SOUTH HAVEN YACHT CLUB

Saturday, June 30 - Michigan Maritime Museum's Tall Ship Friends Good Will is the unique finish boat.  Dock assignments will be on South Haven Yacht Club's website.  They plan to have over 150 slips available.  Finish Gift Bags will be handed out at sign-in.  Early arrival breakfast, lunch and a celebration dinner will be available at South Haven Yacht Club.  Notably, the bar will be open!  Entertainment begins at 11:00 am and will carry through the wee hours.

Sunday, July 1 - Breakfast/Brunch at South Haven Yacht Club.  Transportation for crews via public carriers is being arranged to take crews back to Michigan City, Chicago, Milwaukee, Holland & Muskegon.  They anticipate that many community groups will offer activities and events over the weekend to accommodate the friends and families of the sailors as well as the general public.  Anticipated events include mini-sailboat making for kids, an activity at the South Haven Library, discounts at local merchants, etc.  Check South Haven's Yacht Club website closer to race time for details.  http://www.southhavenyachtclub.com/

2012 LAKE MICHIGAN HARBOR DREDGING--CELEBRATE!

by Glenn T. McCarthy

The dredging is occurring at last.  This is the year to get out and participate in the races that use the ports that are being dredged:  Michigan City Race, Tri-State Races, Waukegan Race, and all others.  Why?  1. Water depths will not be a concern.  2. In the ever tightening of government expenditures, everyone at the Army Corp of Engineers repeated the same theme - harbors that have commercial traffic will continue to be dredged in the future.  Harbors that are "recreational" will struggle to get funding in the foreseeable future.  Millions are being spent for you to enjoy a safe experience.  Enjoy your tax dollars at work and these resources this year.  It is time to get out and enjoy.

DREDGING AROUND LAKE MICHIGAN IN 2012

Always use caution, and before proceeding to these harbors, always double check that these projects are completed to the depths announced by the Army Corp of Engineers.  Delays may occur due to weather, labor, political, finding disposal sites, or environmental windows (animal migration).  Projects are contracted by the Army Corps of Engineers or by the Environmental Protection Agency if part of a hazardous waste clean up.

Waukegan, IL

Some areas are 9' deep currently in the channel.  $1,300,000 is being spent in 2 stages removing 85,000 yards to a 23' depth.  First stage completed by May, second stage in July/August.  Separately the EPA will do additional waste dredging in the outer harbor to 23' depth later in the year.

Chicago, IL

In preparation for the 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration August 15-20, the Navy is bringing a flotilla and needs greater depth at Navy Pier.  Dredging will be completed before July removing 4,000 yards with an estimate of $600,000-$1,000,000 spent.  The finish depth is yet to be determined by the Navy.

Calumet Harbor, IN

Completion of dredging "around the bridges" in the river to 27' depth is to be completed by October.

Indiana Harbor, IN

The outer harbor up to the first bridge is to be dredged to 27' minimum.  The canal is being dredged to 22'.  To remove 200,000 yards this is a multi-year project, in 2012 $6,000,000 is being spent.

Michigan City, IN

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing $935,000 to dredge Michigan City, Indiana.  The dredging will occur in the outer basin only, to a depth of 14' minimum.  The project should take 3 weeks and is expected to be completed by mid-May.  In the last survey a few years ago, the channel up to the bridge goes from 12' with some spots at 10', however prior to 2012 dredging a new survey will be done.

St. Joseph, MI

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' is providing $693,000 in funding for dredging and maintenance of the St. Joseph outer harbor, this is outside the breakwaters and if shoaling is found up the channel they will get what they can, dredging to 21' in April.

Holland / Macatawa, MI

The Army Corps of Engineers has allocated $500,000 to dredge outside the pier heads to 23' and then to 21' in the breakwater. Contract price $500,000.

Grand Haven, MI

Outside the pier heads dredging in April to 23' at a contract cost of $400,000.

Manistee Harbor, MI

To be dredged in April at a cost of $400,000, mostly outside the breakwaters to a depth of 25' and 23' in the channel entrance.

Fox River in Green Bay

The Army Corps of Engineers is dredging outside the Fox River in Green Bay leading up to the river at 26' depth and to 24' at the mouth of the river.  The contract cost is $2,500,000 and is expected to be done June through August.  Meanwhile the EPA is doing a clean up in the Fox River with the first 3 years spending $300,000,000.  Total project cost could exceed $750,000,000 to $1,000,000,0000 over the expected 9 years  (PCB cleanup).

Sheboygan, WI

14 miles of dredging from the Sheboygan Falls dam to the Sheboygan Harbor in a multi-year project of $45,000,000, with 300 to 350 truckloads rolling through the city daily to a landfill.  As it is an EPA Superfund Site Cleanup (PCB's and PAH's), west of the Eighth Street bridge is dredged to 10', however East of the bridge still has 2' and 3' depths and will be dredged to 16'.  Dredging east of the bridge will continue through 2012 and finish in either in late 2012 or in 2013.

Volunteer Sought

Area I Vice Commodore-- LMSRF has an immediate need for an individual from a club in the area north of Manitowoc, WI to St. Ignace, MI, including the waters of Green Bay.  The Area Vice Commodore works to encourage yacht clubs to participate in LMSRF coordinated events and races, to join LMSRF, and to encourage individuals to join LMSRF.  There are monthly 1 hour (really!) conference call meetings, except for the 3 face-to-face meetings a year:  March (this year at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club), June (at Milwaukee Yacht Club), and November (at Chicago Yacht Club).  This work can be done at races and regattas you normally attend and with a few emails and phone calls.  Contact Commodore Glenn McCarthy to learn more today:  commodore@lmsrf.org

Sailboat Sales are UP!
by Glenn T. McCarthy

Report just out in Soundings Trade Only - In 2010 sales of new sailboats was 1,569 units.  In 2011 it was 1,625 units, a 3.6% increase.  The market segment that we need to attract can afford this sport!  We should have increased numbers racing with increased boat sales.  Why not have 3.6% more sailboats racing in 2012?

Lehman 10 Frosbiting in Belmont
FROSTBITE SAILING--WHAT IS IT?
by Gail M. Turluck

Frostbite sailing has traditionally been spring and fall sailboat racing in dinghies, originally in boats like the Lehman 10, Blue Jay, International 12, El Toro, Inter-Club, and Penguin.  It took a hearty soul to compete, as gear included cotton turtlenecks, wool sweaters, woolen long johns, 2-3 pairs of wool socks, rubber boots, a wool hat, and rubberized foulies to brave racing in 35 degree air and water temperatures!  A capsize dumped the crew into the water, usually meaning racing for the day was concluded, as few had double of everything.

Organization of the racing has been typically light-hearted with an accent on many short races (20 minutes or so) in a few hours.  Some start races off a dock or barge.  Many sail in harbors vacated by larger moored boats during the summer.  Safety boats have always been important, with at least two people aboard each one and at the ready, motoring about the course, standing by in case of trouble.  But don't think for a moment that the racers don't care about the results--many treasure a certain trophy or championship achieved in these extreme conditions!

Today's frostbiting has brought on the addition of self-rescuing boats like the 420, Laser, Sunfish, Vanguard 15, and even the Rhodes 19.  Personal gear improvements like drysuits, fleece hats, socks and garments, and neoprene boots and booties have made sailing in these rather inclement conditions almost comfortable.  While safety boats are still present and indispensable, the equipment improvements often mean a sailor rights the boat from a capsize and keeps racing!

Frostbite racing season in some places starts when summer racing concludes and stops when it restarts.  Many clubs are more seasonal, starting Frostbiting in late March or early April until late May for Spring season and late September until the weekend before Thanksgiving for Fall season.  Most commonly the sailing is held on Sundays or Saturdays and Sundays.  The best way to get involved is to contact your club of choice, find out when they're starting, and SHOW UP!

2012 Youth Match Racing Opportunities in the U.S.

by Dave Perry, Chairman,
US Sailing Match Racing Committee

Match Racing is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the sport of Sailing. It is fast-paced, very combative tactically, and it demands you to be pushing the boat, your team and yourself to the highest limits of boat handling and boat speed at all times.

Some of the very best U.S. sailors in our sport are former and current match racers, such as Paul Cayard, Ed Baird, Anna Tunnicliffe, Terry Hutchinson, Sally Barkow, John Kostecki and many others.  Match Racing is both an end to itself, if one chooses to go that route, or a tool to sharpen one's fleet and team racing skills and to help a sailor get to the next level in their sailing career.

The US Sailing Match Racing Committee is actively working on ways to get the more advanced 16-22 year old U.S. sailors into match racing:

1)  A National Youth Match Racing Event which is a qualifier for The Governor's Cup, an international youth match racing event, the Rose Cup, which will be hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, Florida, June 20-24, in Sonars with four to a boat, ages 16-20. Ten skippers will be invited based on requests for invitation; and requests received by April 25 will receive preference. The Request for Invitation form and the Notice of Race are available at www.spyc.org or by phone at 727.892.6893. The 2012 Governor's Cup will be held at the Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California on July 17-22.

2012 US SAILING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, TRAINING & ADMINISTRATION

US Sailing Association is the national governing body for the sport of sailing in our country.  US Sailing, to handle organizational matters, has designated Areas for participatory reporting and event management.  LMSRF, a Regional Sailing Association, is in Area K (see map).  Area Officers and an Area Director are elected by the Regional Sailing Associations.  Areas conduct the final eliminations for US Sailing Championship events and send the winners to the national championships. The Areas also certify local race officers and judges, after they have completed US SAILING certification programs.

There are elimination events conducted on an Area basis for most championships, some coming very soon!  Complete Championship information is available at http://championships.ussailing.org/
