Suzanne Carreker

Meet Keynote Speaker:
Suzanne Carreker earned her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Qualified Instructor. A past president of The Houston Branch of The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and current vice president of the national IDA board, Dr. Carreker is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and has authored numerous journal articles, textbook chapters, and systematic literacy curricula. Dr. Carreker was the 2009 recipient of the Nancy LaFevers Community Service Award. She has been at Neuhaus Education Center since 1987 and currently serves as vice president of programs.

Conference Description:

Critical Comprehension:

Reading Between, Among, and Beyond the Lines

Students may experience difficulties with reading comprehension because of inadequate oral language and vocabulary, insufficient world knowledge, inability to integrate information, poor working memory, lack of sensitivity to causal structures, or inability to identify semantic relationships. This workshop will present evidence-based strategies and activities that help readers increase their vocabulary and metacognitive skills and read with deep comprehension. The importance of text complexity will also be presented.

1:00 p.m. Metacognitive Strategies for Narrative and Expository Text
