2013 Cariad, Colgin
8 cases (3x75cl) - £1085 per case
The 2013 Cariad Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, shows great intensity, with a slightly more burning ember and scorched earthiness to it, giving it a more Graves-like character compared to the purity of the Tychson Hill. The wine is full-bodied, rich, layered and possibly slightly more tannic and backward than the Tychson Hill, but that could be because it had recently been bottled. It should evolve over the course of 30+ years

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Corison
12 cases (12x75cl) - £700 per case
A deep, inky wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is endowed with serious depth. Here the flavors are unusually dark and intense, with plenty of blue and black stone fruits. Graphite, cloves and licorice contribute to an overall impression of gravitas. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet needs time in bottle to truly shine. Hints of violet, lavender and plum add the final shades of nuance. All of the signatures of the vintage come through beautifully. The translucent, mineral-laced finish is especially appealing. Frankly, it's hard to put the glass down.

2013 Maya, Dalla Valle
3 cases (3x75cl) - £1350 per case
The flagship wine, and one of the first in Napa Valley to emphasize the fabulous potential of Cabernet Franc in specific terroirs, is the 2013 Maya Proprietary Red Wine. This wine usually spends about 22 months in new oak and normally has anywhere from 45% to as much as 60% Cabernet Franc blended with the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 could well be the finest they've made to date, and that includes a lot of profound wines. An incredibly complex nose of charcoal embers, blackberry and cassis, some blueberries as well as white flowers, and a touch of forest floor is followed by a full-bodied wine with sweet, well-integrated tannins, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is absolutely remarkable wine - powerful, dense, but at the same time, precise and elegant. It's hard to believe, but I think this wine can probably age and improve for 25-40 years. Don't miss it if you have access to it. 2015-2055.

2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Dalla Valle
30 cases (6x75cl) - £850 per case
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has really closed down since I last tasted it. Beams of tannin give the 2013 its shape and overall energy. Precise and yet also quite explosive, the 2013 will be a magnificent wine once it emerges from its present slumber. Quite simply, this is a captivating wine from Naoko Dalla Valle. Time in the glass provides glimpse of what is in store for readers who wait. However, I imagine opening a bottle before age ten will be largely an academic exercise. 2023-2038.

2013 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, Gallica
14 cases (6x75cl) - £550 per case
Gallica's beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has velvety tannins, loads of plum, blackberry and cassis fruit and a floral component. It has a medium to full-bodied personality that would suggest a suave complex wine from a Bordeaux or Margaux appellation. The wine is quite beautiful with purity, richness and an overall charm that make this an endearing effort in 2013. Moreover, it should drink well for another 20+ years.

2013 Roberta's Reserve, Kapscandy
3 cases (3x75cl) - £1400 per case
At 100% Merlot, the 2013 Merlot Roberta's Reserve is off the charts and could easily eclipse a great vintage of Pétrus in a blind tasting. Fabulous notes of sweet cocoa and chocolate intermixed with black cherry and blackberry soar from the glass of this full-bodied wine that has a deep, rich, profound core of fruit and density. It is a great example of possibly the finest vintage Napa has ever produced for Bordeaux varieties. This wine has greatness all over it, with a minute-plus finish, yet is accessible enough to be drinkable now or cellared for another 30+ years. 300 cases made.

The greatest American merlot ever made. Ranks among the best in the world.

2013 Grand Vin, Kapscandy
3 cases (3x75cl) - £1400 per case
Little can be added to the greatness of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin, a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine (600 cases) is truly stunning in its dense, crème de cassis and blackberry-scented nose with a hint of barbecue smoke and forest floor. Tasting like a ripe vintage of Château Latour from Pauillac, the wine has amazing richness and a savory, expansive mouthfeel, but tiptoes across the palate like a ballerina. A wine of magnificent richness and intensity, but vibrancy, purity and overall equilibrium, this is a staggeringly great wine and another tribute to the Kapcsándy family's extraordinary professionalism and meticulous attention to detail in their vineyard. 600 cases made

2013 Rapszodia, Kapscandy
3 cases (3x75cl) - £1400 per case
Another Cheval Blanc-like blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot is the 2013 Rapszodia Proprietary Red, which has mind-blowing aromatics of blueberries, white flowers, raspberries and foresty notes in a fragrant, compelling scent of explosive perfume. Deep, concentrated, multidimensional, yet vibrant and super-concentrated, this is another tour de force, although only 150 cases were made of this superstar that finished at 13.8% natural alcohol. Drink it over the next 25-35 years. 150 cases made

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard, Myriad Cellars
1 bottle - £205
An absolutely fabulous wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard has an inky bluish/purple color, extraordinary nose of graphite, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, forest floor and spring flora. The wine hits the palate with a full-bodied richness, stunning purity and an absolutely magnificent texture and length. It would be difficult to want more in a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon than this. Drink it over the next 25 years.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr Crane, Myriad Cellars
1 bottle - £265
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard tastes like a California version of a La Mission Haut-Brion. Blueberry and blackberry fruit, wet gravel, crushed-rock notes and white flowers are followed by a full-bodied, elegant wine - with not the level of concentration of the Georges III, but with seemingly more ethereal and sublime subtleties and nuances. This is a stunner with sweet tannin that is beautifully, rich full and long. It should drink well for 20-25 years.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Elysian Reserve, Myriad Cellars
3 bottles - £495 each
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Elysian Reserve has a black/bluish purple color, extraordinary suppleness and velvety integration of tannin, copious quantities of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, graphite and white flowers. It's amazing wine and would be the equivalent of a great vintage of a Mission Haut-Brion on steroids. Whether it lasts 20 years or 30 or 40 is still up for speculation, but this is a profound Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the most compelling examples of this remarkable vintage. This is an utterly compelling, prodigious effort. Here's to you, Mike Smith!

2013 Proprietary Red, Pahlmeyer
4 cases (6x75cl) - £785 per case
An absolute stunner is the 2013 Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Malbec and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This is all mountain fruit from primarily the Stagecoach Vineyard and another site in Rancho Chimiles. Beautiful floral, smoky, blackcurrant notes mixed with acacia flowers and forest floor jump from the glass of this dense, full-bodied, concentrated and age-worthy wine. Like most 2013s, this is a 30-year wine with remarkable concentration, color and fruit extract. Forget it for another 3-4 years, and drink it over the following 30+ years.

2013 Au Paradis, Peter Michael
1 case (3x75cl) - £750 per case
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis comes from one of their newer acquisitions, formerly known as the Showket Vineyard in the red soil hillsides overlooking the Oakville crossroads. This is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc. Production is less than 1,530 cases. The 2013 displays loads of roasted meats, licorice, graphite, dusty, loamy soil notes, creamy blackcurrants and blackberries, stunning richness, and a Pauilllac-like first-growth cedarwood and crème de cassis notes. The Cabernet Franc from this area grows right next to the famous Maya wine of Dalle Valle. This wine spent all of its time in 100% new Daranjou cooperage, which is not even noticeable in the aromatics or flavors. This full-bodied, modern-day classic should age brilliantly for 30-35 years.

2013 Insignia, Phelps
15 cases (6x75cl) - £875 per case
The 2013 Insignia (their 40th vintage) is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and the production can vary from just over 10,000 cases to nearly 20,000 cases in a very abundant vintage. There were 12,300 cases produced in 2013, and this vintage of Insignia is certainly going to turn out to be one of the great ones. The wine offers a stunning inky blue/purple color, a gorgeous nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite, new saddle leather and barrique. The wine has fabulous concentration, a full-bodied, multi-layered mouthfeel, and tremendous finish with moderate tannin. It's interesting to note that the Phelps winemaking staff had been gradually reducing the amount of Merlot in this wine over recent vintages. The 2013 should hit its peak in 5-7 years and last for 35-50.

2013 The Bard, Realm Cellars
3 bottles - £325 each
The perfect 2013 The Bard is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, coming from four vineyards that Realm uses consistently -- B Weitz, Houyi, Blair and of course, the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane in St. Helena. There are 950 cases of this extraordinary wine, which has it all. Notes of graphite, blackberries, roasted espresso and chocolate are followed by a wine of enormous, massive extraction, richness and intensity, but no hard edges. This seamless work of vinous haute couture is staggeringly rich, very long, but not the least bit heavy or overbearing. This is a killer effort that's already showing enormous complexity but should age effortlessly for 15 or more years.

2013 M Etain Cabernet Sauvignon, Scarecrow
4 cases (2x75cl) - £370 per case
The 2013 M. Etain Cabernet Sauvignon, which is hardly a second wine by any means, offers beautiful blackcurrant fruit with some cedar wood/sandalwood notes, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and that layered texture that is so enticing. The wine has a beautiful opaque purple color, hints of graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a touch of licorice and the soil undertones that some would say are part of the so-called "Rutherford dust" scenario, although that's debatable. This wine has the sweetness and opulence to be drunk young, but won't hit its prime for at least another 5-8 years and keep for 20-30.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS, Schrader
1 case (6x75cl) - £1650 per case
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS, also from clone 337, but in this case from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, shows an absolutely perfect 100-point nose of red, black and blue fruits, charcoal, graphite and forest floor. It hits the palate with a seamless integration of wood, tannin, acidity and alcohol and has tremendous opulence and palate presence in its full-bodied, long finish. On aromatics alone, it rates a perfect score, but I ended up being somewhat conservative I suppose. It should drink well for three decades as well.

2013 Screaming Eagle
1 case (3x75cl) - £6490 per case
The 2013 Screaming Eagle flagship wine is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. As one might expect, the purity of the cassis, which is always a hallmark of this estate and wine, is well-displayed in this beauty. Dense purple in color, it offers up some floral notes intermixed with damp earth, blackcurrant jam, blackberry and hints of licorice and incense. This reminds me somewhat of the 2010 Screaming Eagle. Full-bodied, rich, but perfectly balanced, it's another terrific example of this iconic estate. It should drink well for 30 or more years.
97+ Robert Parker

2013 Sloan
3 cases (3x75cl) - £1375 per case
"Typical of the vintage, it is spectacular, inky purple and massive, with unbelievably ripe fruit and a vibrancy and delineation that is breathtaking - given the richness and massiveness of this wine that is a true long-term prospect. It needs 5-6 years of further bottle age and should easily last 30-35 years. The notes of black truffle, charcoal, incense, blackberry and cassis fruit are followed by a full-bodied, stunningly proportioned wine that is loaded, incredibly pure and well-delineated. It is a killer effort from Sloan and probably capable of matching their great efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2007. Drink: 2022-2051."

2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Staglin
50 cases (6x75cl) - £850 per case
The Staglins' flagship wine is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon from their holdings in Rutherford, in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. This wine has an opaque purple color and a stunning nose of blackcurrants, licorice, violets and background oak. It is full-bodied and intensely rich, with sweet tannin and a long finish. Look for it to drink well for 30-40+ years.
95-97 Robert Parker

2013 La Muse, Verite
2 cases (6x75cl) - £1350 per case
The 2013 La Muse, like all of the 2013s, comes about one-third from Alexander Valley vineyards, 40-plus percent from Chalk Hill, and the rest Knights Valley and Bennett Valley - all high-elevation hillside vineyards. A blend of 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec at 14.3% alcohol, the wine is amazingly like a great vintage of Petrus, with mulberry, black cherry, licorice, truffle and unctuous, thick, juicy fruit all present in this full-bodied masterpiece. The tannins are still present. The wine has purity and savory presence and is remarkable. The finish goes on for well past a minute. This wine would probably benefit from 5-8 years of bottle age and last 40-50 years.
100 Robert Parker

2013 La Joie, Verite
1 case (6x75cl) - £1350 per case
The 2013 La Joie, which is 46% from Knights Valley, 32% from Chalk Hill and 22% from Alexander Valley, is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Showing loads of graphite, cedar wood, charcoal, crème de cassis and forest floor, this may well turn out to be a 50+-year wine. It tastes like a great first-growth Pauillac and has an amazing amount of complexity and richness.
100 Robert Parker

2013 Le Desir, Verite
1 case (6x75cl) - £1350 per case
The 2013 Le Desir represents 2,500 cases. This is the softest of the three wines in 2013, and this blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 23% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec emerges with more than half of the cuvée coming from Hillsides in Alexander Valley, 37% from Chalk Hill and the rest tiny dollops from Bennett Valley and Knights Valley. Opaque purple, like its siblings, the wine is showing incredible floral, blueberry and espresso notes, exotic Asian spices, velvety texture, a supple, multilayered mouthfeel and incredible finish, with incense and licorice. This is magnificent young wine, with a good 40-50 years of upside potential. Pierre Seillan is justifiably proud of what he has achieved, and his first vintage of Vérité was only 1998, but they go from strength to strength.
