Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and also a good time to reach out to our neighbors in need. At TowneBank, we are thankful to be part of the generous Hampton Roads community. At our annual TowneBank Foundation Extravaganza, our guests and employees contributed enough food to provide more than 4,000 nutritious meals to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Good nutrition is important, as runners well know.

Don't Forget Your Core
We know you are training your legs; running, stretching, running some more etc. But it's also important not to overlook your core muscles when training for a distance race. Core strength makes you a better runner by improving your power to weight transfer and keeping your form in check as you tire. A strong core comes in very handy toward the end of the race when things start to get hard - and they will.
The best thing about developing core strength is that it doesn't take very long. A 5-10 minute daily routine can make a big difference and pay huge dividends come race day.
Choose Your Exercises - There are literally hundreds of different core exercises; some are fairly straightforward, others are quite elaborate.

Snacking for Stamina
What you eat before you exercise might be the difference between an energized five mile run or a dragging two mile jog that ends in an out of breath walk. Proper nutrition before exercise gives you a strong start, filling your glucose stores providing you with immediate energy and keeping your blood sugars stable for about the first 20 minutes of exercise. Additionally, pre-exercise snacks can top off muscle and liver glycogen stores that will then provide the endurance energy your body needs after your glucose stores are depleted. An ideal pre-workout snack contains adequate fluid to maintain hydration, is low in fiber, fat, and simple sugars. It should be rich in complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and contain a little bit of protein for staying power. The amount of snack you choose depends on the timing and type of exercise. The longer you have to digest before exercising the more you can consume.
