Dear Fiesta Riders,

Congratulations to all participants in this year's Fiesta Metric Century!  We send our sincere gratitude to all Riders, Sponsors, Communities, and Permitting Agencies involved with Fiesta.

A Special Thank You to Official Event Bike Shop Moment Cycle Sport for their Volunteers at the Start/Finish.  Our thanks also to Team Fun Volunteers.  Team Fun is a women's cycling team based in Carlsbad, CA.  They did a fabulous job staffing the difficult all-day Plaza Bonita Rest Stop #1 / #4, and Rest Stop #2 at Otay Lakes.   Our gratitude also to Gloria & the Duarte Family who have ran the Pio Pico Turnaround Rest Stop #3 from the very beginning.

Mother Nature served up a wonderful early Summer day, with a marine layer early A.M. start, gradually thinning and giving way to sunshine on the coast and more sunny & warm conditions inland.
Riders are invited to view happy riders & event sights at the 2014 Fiesta Metric Century Flash Gallery.  Please give the gallery a little time to load when viewing.  All images are courtesy of SCS Photoworks.

Many of Shadow Tour's most Veteran riders were in the field.  Karen Finkelstein & Courtney Krehbiel, from Carlsbad, CA, recorded their 25th Shadow Tour Full Course finish (of 26 possible).  Veteran David Ostermann, El Cajon, CA, made it #14.  David Bruemmer, San Marcos, CA, Linda & Brent Knigge, La Quinta, CA, and Sid Wilson, Phoenix, AZ, all notched #11.  And Larry Cass, San Diego, CA made it #10.  The rider field had 114 riders with previous Shadow Tour events.  Many Thanks for your loyalty!

The Fiesta Metric Perfect Attendance List:

 Karen Finkelstein, Carlsbad, CA (6)
 Courtney Krehbiel, Carlsbad, CA (6)
Brent Knigge, La Quinta, CA (6)
Linda Knigge, La Quinta, CA (6)

It's likely more riders should be listed above.  During registration (Online & Mail-in) riders are asked for Previous Shadow Tour Rides & Previous Fiesta Metric Rides.  Rider list data is kept on the Shadow Tour website.  All riders are encouraged to research their participation numbers by viewing the Rider Lists page.

This year's Fiesta Metric Century attracted a spirited field of 292 riders of all skill levels.  There were riders from California (245), Arizona (31), Nevada (7), Washington (2), and New Mexico (1).  International riders joined us from Baja California (1), Victoria, Canada (1), and New Zealand (1).  The field had 65% Male and 35% Female.  The Median age was 51.  We're pleased to report that of the 196 Full Course Registered Riders, 171 Rolled on Saturday, and 151 completed the Full Metric Century.  That's a strong 88.3% finishing rate! All 2014 Fiesta Results are posted here.

Full Century Finisher Notes:

1.  Full Course Registered Riders who did not check in with the Finish Line Vol's, or if your name is missing from the Finishers List, please email Jim with your Name, Bib #, and "Full Metric" in the Subject line.  We'll remedy the oversight asap!

2.  The Full Century Finishers List will be updated thru COB Jun 15th. Results are finalized at COB Jun 15th.

Regardless of distance or time ridden, all riders earned bragging rights at this year's Fiesta.  Navigating through the Port & Shipyards along Harbor Dr is always challenging.  Thanks for your care & attention to safety!  Clearly, Fiesta riders were watching out for one anther by pointing out obstacles to riders following closely behind.   Bravo!

Cycling through the heart of the 8th largest Metro Area in the U.S. necessitates tradeoffs in order to enjoy the Peppertree-lined Hunte Pkwy and serene Otay Lakes views.  Post-ride, riders reminded us of higher inland temps, roller hills on Otay Lakes Rd, and the grueling Mt. Miguel Rd 1.4 mi climb, all requiring Real Effort. Congrat's!

Our compliments to each rider for exercising extra caution all along the routes.  Safety is always our #1 concern. Thanks for riding alert, pointing out obstacles to each other, signalling your intentions, riding single file to the right, and for watching out for each other. Expecting the unexpected is the name-of-the-game while cycling on public roadways.

SCS Photoworks is hard at work matching helmet numbers on photos. They expect to have them ready today. We'll post a message on the website and riders will receive an email when photos are ready for purchase. Scott Stolarz is a highly skilled photographer, who takes great pride in his craft. His crew member, Pol, was at the Finish Line doing his best to capture every single finisher's photo.

Event Director Jim Knight is always humbled by the many "Above & Beyond" contributions made by Shadow Tour Sponsors, Service providers, Volunteers, and Friends. Matt from Traction Bicycles worked tirelessly on the course keeping riders rolling.  The Shane & Anthony Delivery Crew pressed hard all day keeping all Rest Stops stocked and resupplied.  Natalie Fennel, Susan Oswalt, Danielle Snider, and Angelika Drake worked the Fri Packet pick-up & Sat Reg Tent.  Betsy Smith, Cooper Atkinson, Navy CAPT (Ret) Jim Piburn, among others, helped alert riders on Harbor Dr to Railroad tracks.  A Stellar Vol. crew at the Start/Finish was organized by Bike Shop Sponsor, Moment Cycle Sport; they assisted with Parking, Bike Corral Security, and Finish Line Support. Gloria Duarte and her Family & Friends staffed Rest Stop #3 (6th year in a row).

El Indio Restaurant expertly catered the delicious post-ride Mexican Buffet, while Manny Cepeda provided continuous musical entertainment with his talented Salsa Band Trio. Roy from First Aid Services of San Diego, Inc, patrolled the entire route, treating a minor abrasion.  No serious injuries or incidents were reported.

As always, please ride with extreme care out there.  Expect the unexpected.  Always be alert and ride single file, as far to the right as possible.   Give some thought to adding flashing front and rear lights, even during the day.  Being seen is half the battle!  Event Director Jim rode 15,000+ miles in 2012 & 2013 and he counted on Nite Rider to widen the safety margin on every single mile!
