Your Library News - July 2014
2014 Booksale Was a Great Success!

The 2014 Friends Annual Booksale, ETC. held at Ranger School in Tiverton on May 31st proved to be our most successful and well-attended sale to date. The Friends would like to thank all area residents who generously donated quality used books, several thousand of which were presented for sale. We are grateful for the efforts of the 100+ volunteers who worked on this event in various capacities. Please click here
for the full text of our thank you letter, including a complete listing of the many area merchants and businesses who lent their support. THANK YOU!

The Importance of Library Programming

and Community Partnerships

The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS)

reports that high funding levels and full library staffing correlate positively with high visitation rates, circulation, and program attendance, while cuts to funding are associated with decreased use of public libraries.

Another trend that holds true across libraries large and small, urban and rural, is a steady increase in attendance at library programs. Since 2004, attendance at programs has increased more than thirty percent nationwide.

Library partnerships with local nonprofits and government organizations are becoming more and more essential to libraries. Since programs can be labor-intensive to set up and run, being able to pool resources with other organizations can make things easier on library staff. Broader public service programs are reflective of libraries across the country becoming more connected with local partners and their communities.

 Beginning Beekeeping Workshop!

Sanne Kure-Jensen will wrap up our Summer Reading Program with a free program on Beginning Beekeeping on Monday, July 28th, 6:30 pm, in the Yellow Building at Sandywoods, 73 Muse Way.

Backyard beekeeping continues to grow in popularity. AT this free workshop, you'll see the essential equipment: woodenware, bee-suits, and smokers. Hear why bees swarm and how to collect them. Learn how to install bees in a hive, which pests and diseases to watch out for, and how to collect honey. Organic practices in gardens and lawns benefit honey bees and native pollinators.  Discover how many other products are made with help from beeswax, honey or propolis.
