  1.                    Chairman's Welcome and Observations (Maitland)-

The Chairman opened the meeting at 5:12 and introduced the Board of Directors.  He reflected on the importance of such gatherings not only for the organization, but the entire maritime industry.  He anticipates accelerated growth in 2015 as the industry continues to emerge from the shipping slump.

 

  1.                 Executive Director's Report on Activity

The Executive Director recapped the year's activities: 

  • We were recognized for our efforts by Lloyd's List as the winner of their Marine Environment Award for 2014 (you may have noticed our new logo!)
  • Held 6 Environmental Intelligence in Maritime (EIM) events (Houston, San Francisco, Washington DC, Anchorage, New York) featuring issues important to our industry and the marine environment
  • Held a US regulatory update at Posidonia, Greece.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WEDA (Western Dredging Association)
  • Continued to distribute marine debris posters with the USCG Auxiliary
  • Working with the OAS-CIP, translated our marine debris poster into Spanish and distributed over 30,000 copies throughout the Americas
  • Partnered with Sea Research Foundation and the USCG on this year's Student Drawing Contest, reaching nearly 5 million children
  • Represented NAMEPA at 20 maritime events
  • Launched monthly enewsletter
  • Worked with 5 interns, thus expanding the reach of NAMEPA into colleges and universities
  • In partnership with the American Salvage Association, conducted a Student Science Fair
  • Hosted the 2014 North American World Maritime Day in Cozumel, which featured remarks from IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu and Transport Canada's Sylvain Lachance , and RADM Paul Thomas (who received a trumpet fanfare for his speech)as well a marine debris education session at a local high school with over 30 students.
  • Produced our Marine Debris Curriculum Guide for students K-12 as well as an activity book.
  • Launched NAMEPA Mexico
  • Hired Valerie Cordemans to deepen our Canadian representation.

 

Board met 4 times this year including a retreat to initiate strategic planning for the next 3 years.  Prepared to sign MOU with United States Power Squadron in January. 

 

Building chapters in maritime academies and schools.  Invited to speak at the Toledo Maritime Academy.  Building relationships in Alaska with the Maritime Employment Task Force and the Mayor of the North Slope Borough

 

Last week we established NAMEPA Mexico chapter.  I strongly urge you to attend their meetings!  Our goal is to also establish a NAMEPA Canada once there is enough participation.

 

Working with NOAA and the IMO to build the Consortium for International Maritime Heritage.  Stay tuned!
