Winston's Corner

Greetings Everyone, you may know me 'WINSTON' , the official mascot of the Humane Society of Rome.  I also have a weekly column in the Rome Sentinel Seven Day Sentinel Edition, 'WINSTON'S PET PERSONALS', showcasing shelter animals up for adoption.  This very popular column has been running since 1999 and has generated hundreds of adoptions.  Every quarter in our newsletter I will be bringing you shelter success stories.   This quarter's success story is about Craig - his story is below.

Craig - an 11 year old neutered male, tri-color beagle mix, is a sweet and loveable boy who needed surgery on his foot and eyes to remove cysts when he was brought to the shelter by Rome Animal Control.  A plea was put out on Facebook to help assist with his medical bills. The Shelter even brought him to the Rome Home Show where people were very forthcoming with their donations to his medical fund.  One person in particular was Craig's "guardian angel".  Mrs. Grace Garro came forward during the Home Show and said she would pay for Craig's surgery!  What a wonderful gesture on her part. With her contribution and those of all the other people who supported Craig, we were able to schedule the surgery for May 11th and are happy to report that the Craig came through the surgery just fine.  To put an even happier ending to this story, Craig was adopted two days after his return from the veterinary hospital.  A lovely young lady put a pre-adoption in on Craig prior to his surgery and told the Humane Society to call her just as soon as he could be adopted, which we did.  Craig has found his forever home and due to the generosity of Mrs. Garro and the many fine supporters of Craig and the Humane Society , he will be able to take walks with his new owner and see all the sites there are to see.  If you have an adoption  story that you feel we should spotlight please use the link below.

HSR in the News

Big thanks to  Teddy's Restaurant  for hosting last week's dinner fundraiser, "Raise The Woof". The mouthwatering event raised $1,336 for the animals of HSR. Our thanks to everyone who supported the annual event!

RFA's 9th Grade Social Studies Class did a month long fundraiser for the Humane Society of Rome.  The students  made posters and learned about the humane treatment of  animals and why it is important to volunteer in the community.   Through many different avenues the class raised $789  for the Humane Society and expressed that they want to do  even better next year.  Thank you to the students and staff  at RFA for your support!

A Great Big Heartfelt THANK YOU to Dan Williams and his crew from Williams Fence of Deansboro who donated their time and service on Saturday, June 4th.   Dan and his crew repaired and replaced  dog kennel gates throughout the shelter. The dogs send you great big kisses!!!  Thanks so mutts.

The 2016 Daily Sentinel Annual Pet Photo Contest was a complete success. There were hundreds of entries and thousands of votes.  The photos were adorable and very creative.  A portion of the proceeds go to the Humane Society of Rome and this year the Rome Daily Sentinel presented a check for over $3000.  Thank you Rome Daily Sentinel and to all that entered and voted!

The Humane Society would like to thank George Dibble, one of the many dedicated volunteers that comes to walk the dogs on a weekly basis.  George takes the time on his day off to come and walk as many dogs as he can in the time that he has available.  George also volunteers at various Humane Society events that require dogs to be present and helps showcase them.  Many thanks George and we look forward to seeing you every week.
