There's nothing like the crisp, cool air and luscious foliage to get you excited for the changing seasons. Your pet, too, is probably welcoming a break from summer's hot, sticky weather. But fall is also a time of lurking dangers for our furry friends. From household poisons to cold weather hazards, there are important safety issues to consider.
Below are some tips to keep your pet happy and healthy during the autumn months.
Be Cautious of Rodenticides and Cold Weather Poisons
The use of rat and mouse poisons increases in the fall as rodents seek shelter from the cooler temperatures by attempting to move indoors. Rodenticides are highly toxic to pets and, if ingested, the results could be fatal. If you must use these products, please do so with extreme caution and put them in places inaccessible to your pets.
Keep School Supplies Out of Paws' Reach
Fall is back-to-school time, and those of you with young children know that means stocking up on items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. Although these items are considered low toxicity to pets, gastrointestinal upset and blockages can occur if ingested. Be sure your children keep their school supplies out of your pet's reach.
Steer Clear of Mushrooms
Fall and spring are mushroom seasons. While 99% of mushrooms have little or no toxicity, the 1% that are highly toxic can cause life-threatening problems in pets. Since most toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from nontoxic ones, the best way to prevent pets from ingesting these poisonous plants is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom.
Watch Out for Wildlife
Autumn is the season when snakes are preparing for hibernation, increasing the possibility of bites to those unlucky pets who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Pet parents should know what kinds of venomous snakes may be lurking in their environment--and where those snakes are most likely to be found-so pets can be kept out of those areas.
Greetings Everyone, you may know me as 'WINSTON', the official mascot of the Humane Society of Rome. I also have a weekly column in the Rome Sentinel Seven Day Sentinel Edition, 'WINSTON'S PET PERSONALS', showcasing shelter animals up for adoption. This very popular column has been running since 1999 and has generated hundreds of adoptions. Every quarter in our newsletter, I will be bringing you shelter success stories.
This quarter's success story is about Madonna - her story is below.
Submit a Success Story Here!
Madonna came to the shelter on 12/26/2014. She was an owner surrender, due to landlord issues. She was here at the shelter almost two years. Madonna was a free spirited cat, who enjoyed her independence.
She liked to be petted, but let you know when she had had quite enough. She enjoyed being the only cat in the household. She also wasn't overly affectionate, but yet, she had her own unique personality and would let people know if she liked them. She was just waiting for the right person or persons to come along. She would know it, and they would know it. Finally, that day came on 8/16/2016 when her forever home family walked through the door. To the Hendersons, it was love at first sight and to Madonna, well being Madonna, it took a couple of looks but she warmed up and took treats from each family member. It was unanimous: Madonna was going home! We wish Madonna and her new family a long and happy life together.

Honor America Days
The awards just keep coming in for HSR. We participated in the Honor America Day Parade held on July 30th and placed 2nd in the Ronald A. Swiney Best in Parade Organization Category! Our float celebrated the Fort with a replica and a cannon that shot a sign stating "woof". Our staff was dressed in colonial hats and carried muskets. You can find our picture on our Facebook page.
Pet Photo Contest Results
The 2016 Daily Sentinel Annual Pet Photo Contest was a complete success. There were hundreds of entries and thousands of votes. The photos were adorable and very creative. A portion of the proceeds go to the Humane Society of Rome, and this year the
Rome Daily Sentinel
presented a check for over $3000. Thank you, Rome Daily Sentinel and all that entered and voted!
Thank You UTCAS!
A huge thank you to
UTC Aerospace Systems
of Rome! Through a $2,000 c
ompany grant they, along with their
wonderful employees, came out and spent several hours sprucing up the
Humane Society of Rome shelter. The hard-working, 13-person crew demolished our aging "puppy corral" and built our dogs a brand new one. Way to go, team! We would also like to thank Lowe's of Rome and Taylor Rental in Rome for the donation of necessary items needed to
complete this much needed project.
The people in the picture from left to right: Craig Matzek, Kaitlyn Valenti, Matt Galuska, Mike Chambers, Sara Tuthill (Humane Society), Helene Rudiak (Humane Society) Ben Morczek, Dan Sweet, Dan Crofoot, Cassandra Fusco, Justin Hawthorne, Crystal Marceau and Joshua Strickland. The two people missing from the team photo that also participated were Ella Rivera & Sam Barres.
Meet Tony Spatto, one of our newest volunteers. Tony has been coming to the shelter every Saturday and helping with the laundry, dog and cat dishes, cleaning and feeding. Tony has also rounded up volunteers to help with off-site events to help promote the shelter. Tony, as well as all our volunteers, are always ready and willing to help HSR wherever needed. Watch for our 4th Quarter newsletter which will feature another wonderful HSR volunteer! Thanks to all our volunteers. Your services are appreciated more than you know.

Thanks to all the donors who contributed to our Medical Fund for Sheila the Dog (cherry eye) and Ralph the Cat (dental procedures). Both surgeries have been performed, and both Ralph and Sheila have already found their forever home.
Interested in adopting a cat or dog? All potential adopters must first fill out an application. You can submit your application to us by email, fax, mail, online, or you can always come down to the shelter to fill out a form. Potential adopters are required to interact with the animal you are interested in adopting prior to adoption. If you are already a current pet owner, be sure to let our staff know, as a meet and greet is required prior to adoption.
