Ways to Help
Don't just take your dog for a walk; take your Walk for a Dog every day!
This is a revolutionary, dog-powered fundraising tool for animal shelters. The Walk for a Dog program makes it possible to raise funds for your local animal shelter every time you take your dog for a walk.
Every Walk for a Dog counts, whether it's a walk around the block or a three-mile hike. The more people actively walking with the app engaged, the greater the donation to HSR.
Amazon Smile is a simple way for you to support your favorite
charitable organization every time you shop at Amazon, at no cost to you.
When you shop at Amazon Smile, you'll find the exact same low prices, vast selection, and convenient shopping experience as at amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization.
today, and select the Humane Society of Rome as your designated charity
PAWS for a Cause
We now offer PAWS donation cards.
Donation cards allow you to contribute to the HSR by donating a monetary amount. In return, you will receive a paw shaped card where you can write your name or your pet's name. Your card is then hung in the place of business where it was purchased.
When you donate, the HSR gets 100% of your donation.
If you or your business is interested in selling these cards as a fundraiser, please contact
Donate Your Bottles and Cans
Would you like to support the shelter but don't have much free time or extra money? How about donating your bottles and cans?
Drop them off at Green World Bottle and Can Return Center, 1318 Erie Blvd. W, Rome, and ask to have the donation added to the Humane Society of Rome account. This is an easy way to help our animals.
If you can't make it to Green World Bottle, you can drop your returnables at the shelter.
Pet Rescue Rx
"A pets before profits pharmacy" - saving you money on pet medications and helping to save the lives of millions of homeless pets across the country!
ALL PROFITS are donated to the shelter or rescue selected by our customers.
Purina Points Weight Circles
Help us earn points when you purchase Purina® brand products, and collect weight circles.
Simply cut and save the circles from
participating Purina® brand Dog Foods you have purchased and bring them to the shelter.
We save the weight circles and submit them in bulk. Purina® then sends us a check towards the future purchase of dog food. This saves the shelter the large expense of feeding our shelter dogs.
Every bit helps!!!
Buy a Bed
We use Kuranda® Dog and Cat Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean.
You may know me as 'Winston', the official mascot of the Humane Society of Rome.
I have a weekly column in the Rome Sentinel's Seven Day Sentinel Edition called 'WINSTON'S PET PERSONALS', which showcases shelter animals that are up for adoption.
My very popular column has been running since 1999 and has generated hundreds of adoptions!
Our success story for this quarter features two of our older cats, Annie, a 12 year old, and Jessie, an 11 year old.
After a long wait, Annie was adopted on December 13th, and Jessie was adopted with her. Together, they will be in their forever home for Christmas with their new owner, Gary. He gave them early Christmas presents by bringing new carriers and soft beds for each of them so they could be transported to their new home in comfort.
In the photo above, Annie (R) is held by shelter worker Penny, and Jessie (L) is held by Gary.
Thank you, Gary, for providing a loving home for Annie and Jessie!!!

HSR would like to recognize Kevin Piatt, pictured on the right, in our Volunteer Spotlight this quarter. Kevin comes to the shelter one day a week, every week, and helps with the many tasks that need to be done. He washes litter pans, food bowls, and litter scoops; he does laundry and sweeps the floor; and, best of all, he always brings special treats for the animals! He stops by each kennel with treats for the dogs, and every kitty gets a bit of catnip. Thanks for all you do, Kevin, for HSR and for the animals in our care!
Interested in volunteering with HSR?
Our volunteers help make the world a more humane place for our shelter animals and improve the lives of many.
We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities, and volunteering only takes a few hours a week. For more information, call 315-336-7070 or click the link below.
If you know a volunteer who should be recognized in our Spotlight column, use the link below to submit a story.

A HSR representative has been bringing our shelter pets to local nursing homes to help
improve the residents' social, emotional, and/or cognitive well-being.
This continues to be a rewarding program for HSR, for the residents, and for our sweet shelter pets. Pet therapy visits to area nursing homes bring a true sense of joy to all involved.
Seniors and adults with special needs love to pet and hug the animals that we bring (whether
big or small, young or old, cat or dog), and the animals, in turn,
revel in the extra
Pictured here is Sonja, a three-year-old pomeranian, sitting contentedly on the lap of a St. Luke's Facility resident. Sonja visited St. Luke's Facility on December 7th, and she brought smiles to all who met her.
Pet therapy is a wonderful way of letting our shelter animals share their love.
For more information, please call Helene Rudiak, Shelter Manager, at 315-337-1434 or at the main shelter number 315-336-7070.
Chino's surgery for a broken leg has been completed successfully, and he is recovering nicely.
He needs another four weeks of confined and limited use of his leg. Unfortunately, foster homes that were lined up for him have fallen through. If anyone is able to foster Chino for the required time, please contact Helene Rudiak, Shelter Manager, at 315-337-1434 or at the main shelter number 315-336-7070.
Chino's needs are simple. He must be kept quiet and not be allowed on stairs or furniture. He likes to be around people, and he will contentedly lie on his bed next to you or in any room where he feels like part of the family. After the four-week period, he will be re-evaluated and then will be available for adoption.
Interested in adopting a cat or dog? All potential adopters must first fill out an application. You can submit your application to us by email, fax, mail, online, or you can always come down to the shelter to fill out a form. Potential adopters are required to interact with the animal you are interested in adopting prior to adoption. If you are already a current pet owner, be sure to let our staff know, as a meet and greet is required prior to adoption.
Some of you may not know that the Humane Society of Rome offers many items for purchase. Whether you are looking for dog or cat food, collars, or even clothing... we have that! Many if not all of our items are less expensive than big chain stores, and all of the proceeds go directly back to our shelter. Buying from the HSR is a win-win for everyone!
We are Science Diet Approved Vendor.
Caring for our animals requires a lot of time, love, money, and supplies.
