BCNC Portraits: ShaoLong Zhang

ShaoLong Zhang worked as a pharmacist in China, but when she came to the U.S. in 2011, she quickly learned her limited English would prohibit her from continuing her career. This realization led her to BCNC. While ShaoLong was parenting two young boys, she progressed through three levels of English classes and completed a Career Readiness class. In 2015, she enrolled in a hospitality training program and is now working full-time at the Sheraton Hotel. ShaoLong is determined to save enough money to accomplish her long-term goal of studying and returning to pharmacy work. ShaoLong is an exceptional example of a student, dedicated to improving her family's situation. We congratulate ShaoLong for being the recipient of the South Cove Community Health Center Adult Student Award at the Banquet. Click here for a video of ShaoLong's story.

Quincy Youth Participate in Urban Planning Workshop

BCNC Quincy Youth recently participated in an urban planning workshop with Harvard University graduate students. The youth explored North Quincy to observe different aspects of city planning, and then envisioned their own designs through the use of maps. Some of their brainstormed ideas include adding shopping centers, community spaces, underground parking lots, new walking paths, parks, and more housing.

Providing Career Advancement in Early Education for Immigrants

Funded by the City of Boston's Office of Workforce Development Community Development Block Grant, BCNC partners with Urban College to provide a career ladder for Chinese-speaking immigrants in Early Childhood Education. Chen Yue Xiao is an immigrant from China with limited English abilities. Chen Yue had worked in the food industry, but was passionate about working with children. Through this program, Chen Yue takes free classes in early education, receives English writing support, and has a 9 month placement as a substitute teacher at BCNC. We are de dicated to support Chen Yue's dream to become an early childhood educator!
Parents Learn Details of New School Enrollment Plan

On February 26, BCNC parents attended a workshop on the "United Enrollment Plan" - a new application system for parents to enroll their children in Boston Public Schools, Charter Schools, or Catholic Schools. BCNC hosted speakers Rahn Dorsey (Chief of Education for the City of Boston), Rachel Weinstein (Boston Compact), and Jessica Tang (Boston Teacher Union) to share their expertise and perspective regarding the new plan. Parents were curious to learn whether the new plan will address ELL students and special education students' needs, as well as the plan's intention to improve school quality.
