2016 Preservation Award Winners
Eight Shaker Heights properties were recognized with Preservation Awards from the Shaker Heights Landmark Commission for renovation and restoration work. The awards were presented at City Hall on September 26, 2016. The Commission established its Preservation Awards program in 1998 to celebrate those who preserve and improve Shaker Heights properties with particular commitment to their heritage, craftsmanship, original materials, and continuing potential as viable and inspiring structures.  

Retention of Original Materials

  • 14105 Becket Road, Merit Award, new leaded glass windows
  • 18513 Van Aken Boulevard, Merit Award, new wood shingle roof
  • 3645 Norwood Road, Merit Award, new slate roof

Exterior Restoration

  • St. Dominic Church, Merit Award, steeple restoration
  • 18726 Winslow Road, Honor Award, comprehensive renovation

Excellence in Stewardship

  • 18432 Lynton Road, Honor Award, Tudor half-timbering
  • 18550 South Woodland Road, Honor Award, comprehensive renovation
Special Award for Adaptive Reuse
  • 16005 Chagrin Boulevard, car dealership to self-storage conversion
Watch for photos and displays at the Shaker Heights Public Library, on Facebook and in Shaker Life magazine. The Landmark Commission is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Preservation Awards. Nominations can be submitted for any building in Shaker Heights, including homes and apartment buildings, commercial buildings and other structures. Exterior projects completed after April 2015 are eligible. Shaker Goes Modern Bike Tour

This Bike Shaker tour takes you to homes and businesses designed for modern living in Shaker Heights, from an AIA award winning house to an internationally known architect's last public commission now on the National Register of Historic Places.  $20 for bike rental and tour, with $5 discount for SHS members and/or $5 discount if you ride your own bike. Speaker will discuss recommended regular maintenance for air conditioners, forced air furnaces and boilers, and if maintenance plans are a good idea. Advanced Class: Caulk, Weatherstrip & Insulate (Hands-On!)

Be part of a small group and learn how to caulk, weatherstrip and insulate. No bystanders—everyone participates! Roll up your sleeves, grab your caulk gun and learn how to caulk; add weatherstripping to a door and window; hang and install different kinds of insulation in a variety of places. Classroom fee is $40 and materials fee is $20 (includes contractor-grade caulk gun, caulk, spray foam insulation and materials used in class). Registration is required to reserve a seat.
