Announcing the 2017 A Novel Idea Selection
|
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi was announced as the 2017 "
A Novel Idea" selection at a public unveiling on December 2 at the Downtown Bend Library.
"A Novel Idea" is the largest community read program in the state of Oregon. Last year thousands of residents read, discussed and attended free cultural and author events at the Library's six branches and at partnering businesses. With this year's selection of Homegoing, the Library anticipates the highly successful program's continued growth. The book is now available for check out (print, eBook, and audio book). You'll find a photo album of the unveiling festivities here. "A Novel Idea" programming begins April 8, 2017, and culminates with a free presentation by author Yaa Gyasi on May 7 at Bend High School.

It's Cold Outside, but this Story Will Warm Your Heart |
DPL teen librarian April recently received a grant from Great Stories Club to give underserved youth facing significant challenges the opportunity to read, reflect, and share ideas on topics that resonate with them. April used the grant to lead a book club with Oregon Youth Challenge Program (OYCP) students. OYCP is an alternative, residential high school program for students who have encountered numerous challenges and hardships in their lives. The book club gave students a chance to connect in new ways through the power of books. As one student wrote to April, "Thank you for being open minded and non-judgmental toward us. You have taught me that I really enjoy reading!"

This year we've heard a lot about personal "echo chambers," wherein we often read information that reinforces our existing points of view. Some people are looking to challenge the echo chambers. One of our free online resources can help you do just that: Opposing Viewpoints allows you to explore hundreds of hot-topic issues from a variety of sides.
