2016 NJ Bike & Walk Summit Update: Summit Schedule, Plus Additional Speakers Announced!

The 2016 NJ Bike & Walk Summit takes place on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.  The NJBWC Summit is New Jersey's statewide meeting of bicycle and pedestrian advocates, elected officials and other civic leaders, transportation and urban planners, bike shop owners and managers, cycling, walking, fitness and health enthusiasts and experts, recreation, trails and club leaders and others who are interested in making our state a better place to live.  It's an invaluable opportunity to connect and collaborate, and a perfect way to stay on the cutting edge of developments in active transportation in New Jersey and across the region.

Technology Meets Sustainability
The NJBWC is pleased to welcome Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) and Code for Princeton to the 2016 NJ Bike & Walk Summit. CITP and Code for Princeton are hosting a "hackathon" on transportation policy concurrently with the summit. The goal of the hackathon is to bring together interdisciplinary teams of coders, policy enthusiasts, and community members to design technology solutions to local transportation issues. These solutions can include apps, portals, and mapping tools. The hackathon participants will be visiting many of the summit sessions in order to gain knowledge on transportation issues.

At the 2016 Bike & Walk Summit, you'll be able to hear from some of the best and brightest minds at the forefront of bicycle and pedestrian advocacy on the local, state, and national level. Featured speakers for the 2016 Summit include Barbara McCann of the USDOT, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists Alex Doty, and Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, in addition to over 20 panel sessions and presentations. Featured Speakers for 2016
Barbara McCann
Barbara McCann serves as Director of the Office of Safety, Energy, and Environment in the Policy Office of the Secretary of the US Department of Transportation. She directs the Department-wide pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative. Prior to joining DOT in January 2014, McCann served as the founding Executive Director of the National Complete Streets Coalition, where she earned her unofficial title as one of the architects of the Complete Streets movement, having advanced the adoption of policies to make streets safe for all users. In 2013 Island Press published her book, Completing Our Streets: The Transition to Safe and Inclusive Transportation Networks.
Alex Doty
Alex Doty is the Executive Director for the League of American Bicyclists, having taken the helm after thirteen years with the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, where he rose from the volunteer ranks to become its Executive Director. Achievements while he led the Coalition include a significant expansion of The Circuit system of hundreds of miles of new trails and creating the Better Bike Share Partnership, which helped bring bike share stations to regions of Philadelphia outside Center City. We look forward to hearing Alex's update on future plans for the League.
Mayor Liz Lempert
A former writer, producer and Editor for NPR's environmental news program "Living on Earth," and Princeton's first mayor after consolidation, Mayor Liz Lempert actively promotes sustainability and encourages transportation options. Under her leadership, Princeton is making great strides in providing opportunities for residents to move out of single occupancy vehicles and walk, bicycle and use transit. The League of American Bicyclists recognized this work when Princeton was designated as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community in 2013, and Greater Mercer TMA has designated Princeton as a Gold Level Safe Routes to School Municipality.
