United Way of North Central Florida Receives
43,200 Books from Dollar General Corp.

United Way of North Central Florida was selected to receive to 43,200 books from Dollar General Corporation, headquartered in Goodlettsville, TN. The books, ranging from youth to adult fiction and non-fiction, were delivered Thursday, December 17 at 8:00 a.m. to the Gainesville Regional Airport.

A total of 18 pallets measuring 4' x 4', each holding 40 boxes containing 60 books per box, were donated by the major retailer from its Alachua County distribution center. The books will later be sorted by UWNCFL staff and distributed to the community in partnership with the Gainesville Regional Airport. The airport donated a hangar to house the massive delivery. Volunteers from Florida Food Service unloaded the pallets.

"We are excited to partner with the United Way of North Central Florida and the Gainesville Regional Airport to provide these books and to support adult literacy throughout the area," said Denine Torr, Dollar General's senior director of community initiatives. "Dollar General has a strong commitment to literacy and education in the communities it serves. Since its inception in 1993, the DGLF has awarded more than $100 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly six million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education."

The books will be stored at the airport from January 1 to March 31 and donated to partner agencies and community organizations with literacy-based programs, said UWNCFL President & CEO Deborah Bowie.

"This generous donation from Dollar General is a remarkable contribution to our region," Bowie said. "We are so grateful to be selected as a donor community, and know that our partners will benefit greatly from the use of these books in their outreach efforts to boost literacy and education in North Central Florida," Bowie added.

All United Way Impact Partner Agencies are eligible to receive donations and will be taken as priority. Community organizations, literacy groups, and location education initiatives also will receive consideration. If you or your organization would like to learn how you can receive a portion of the donated books, please email [email protected].
