FIVE TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR MIND FOR A MARATHON....AND FOR LIFE
From Dr. Beth McQuiston, Abbott Medical Director

Whether you're a newbie runner or an experienced marathoner, the mental aspect of training to run a marathon is equally important as the physical aspect. Here are some expert tips from Dr. Beth McQuiston, neurologist and medical director at Abbott, a leading global healthcare company and title sponsor of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.

1) Tap Into the Power of Habit

It's much easier to stick with a training or exercise routine when it becomes a habit. So tie your exercising to triggers-- like making a pot of coffee or putting on your shoes--to make the process of getting up and out there automatic.

2) Visualize Yourself Doing Your Best

That goes for exercise and it goes for all we do in our lives. It keeps us motivated and focused.

3) Anticipate Obstacles

Minimize excuses that get in your way. For example, sleep in your (clean!) workout clothes or pre-program the coffee maker. Tie overcoming obstacles to a reward and eliminate the reasons your brain will tell you not to train today.

4) Tap Into the Power of "Green Exercise"

Exercising outdoors can help release "feel good" hormones, which may explain why people who exercise outdoors claim to enjoy it more. If you can't run outside, then watch a nature program on television while running on a treadmill or listen to sounds of nature on your headset.

5) Deconstruct Your Goal
Break your training goal down into smaller pieces so you can stay focused on building up to it and celebrating the milestones.  This type of planning and judgment creates mental pathways that can be transferred to everyday life, to help regulate moods and have better judgment.
