COMPETITION RESULTS
SkillsUSA 1st place Gold Medal design by Nour Tanbal. 
SkillsUSA  NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

More than 16,000 students, teachers and business partners participated in the 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY.  
Two Tucson High Magnet School Graphic Communications students were among the top competitors in the nation.
Nour Tanbal returned to nationals for the 2nd year in a row and earned a 1st place Gold medal in T-Shirt Design. 
Jonathan McCullough competed in Pin Design and earned a 2nd place Silver medal.

FCCLA  NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Students from Rincon and Cholla High joined more than 7,500 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) student leaders, members, and advisers at the Music City Center in Nashville, TN, July 2nd-6th to participate in the annual FCCLA National Leadership Conference.

Jessica Class, Rincon, FCCLA National Champion
J essica Class, Rincon, earned a 1st place Gold Medal in F a shion Design creating a dress from recycled materials. 
Caroline Farkas, Cholla, competed in the Ill ustrated Talk and earned a 3rd place Bronze Medal. 
Farkas said the entire event and time leading up to it helped her "increase self-confidence and speak her opinions."

Tucson High Magnet Business Students competed in the Future Business Leaders of America competition and won state titles.
Ali Abdulameer, 1st place, Economics;  Jaime Ortiz, 1st place, Securities and Investments and 1st place in Business LawBianca Fuentes1st Place in Journalism. 
Advisor Mona Rutherford took and her team competed at Nationals  in Anaheim, CA.

PALO VERDE FILM/TV PARTNERS WITH PBS
Laura Caucci, Film and TV Teacher at Palo Verde Magnet High School announced Palo Verde High is the newest PBS affiliated Student Reporting Lab.  Caucci said she applied more than 1 year ago there are only 3 high schools in AZ  and less than 100 nationwide to have this status. Her students will research, write and report on issues vital to the community. Once stories are produced, they are submitted to PBS for possible national broadcast on the PBS Newshour.

For the past 6 months, CTE teachers worked with CTE-ELA Curriculum Trainer Kristi Esquerra, to refine the TUSD CTE curriculum maps, scope & sequence and align plans with standards for:  ELA, Math, Culturally Relevant, Employability and Technical standards.

Tucson High, Pueblo and Sunnyside Bioscience students interned at the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department's Bio-Science Academy at the Tres Rios Water Reclamation Facility, in a month-long summer program.

YEA! National Competition 
Arissa Gonzalez is a 2017 graduate of Tucson High Magnet School and the CEO of her own company: EmergenFeet. Arissa won the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) Investor Pitch and qualified to compete in New York at the national Saunders Competition.

to enhance skills, knowledge and earn college credit.

21 Tucson Unified CTE Faculty and Staff members participated in the 
Arizona Career and Technical Education Summer Conference. 
TUSD CTE Presenters included:  Chuck McCollum and Ismael Guerrero:  Microsoft Specialist Certification; Jack Ramsey, Sahuaro Automotive and Ann-Marie Condes, Palo Verde Engineering: Solar Car Construction; Ben Davis, Sahuaro Engineering:  Legos.

ADOBE, MICROSOFT & SPORTSMEDICINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

CTE Teachers and students from throughout Southern Arizona including Pima and Santa Cruz County participated in Adobe Certified Specialist and Microsoft Office Specialist software training culminating in certification testing. 
Tucson Unified teachers who completed the training were assigned iPads or Surface Pros to work with in their labs.

WELDING

Cholla Welding students earned 14 individual certifications with some students earning more than 1 cert. These trained welders as graduates are moving into high paying jobs:  1 graduate is working for the Davis-Monthan with a starting  salary of  $52/hr and  1 graduate is enrolled in the Phoenix area studying Underwater Welding.

PHARMACY TECH
Cholla Pharmacy Tech students Arianna Camacho and Adriana Kendrick passed the rigorous national certification exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

Chuck  McCollum  presented Tucson Unified CTE year-end accomplishments to the Pima County JTED Governing Board June 15th The video showcase below was presented to the PCJTED Governing Board and features Palo Verde's Optimal Robotics, Pueblo's Bioscience, THMS Precision Machining and more.

CTSO OFFICER TRAINING
Career and Technical Student Organization Advisors and Students are invited to participate in a leadership training hosted by Curt Bertelsen of the Pima County JTED. This training will facilitate the development of skills and a program of work. See dates and locations of the training below.
ANNUAL PROGRAM EVALUATION 

As part of the Carl Perkins Federal Grant, select programs are part of the Annual Program Review held on September 21, 2017. The September 21st event will take place at Santa Rita JTED Starting with a hot breakfast. Students, industry partners, parents and additional stakeholders will participate. See the Program Evaluation link below for more information.
