Kitchen Angels staff is currently streamlining our processes to ensure the accurate delivery of services when we begin our building renovation. We are tracking meal creation, food flow and monitoring back-stock to ensure we have the correct number of meals. We are asking volunteers to not take entrees, salads, soup, fruit or desserts without staff permission. Some days we may have surplus that can be given out, but that determination will be made by staff members only. If you would like a meal, or some element of a meal, please ask a staff member. Depending on our supply, we will either offer you a $5 meal of your choice, or a free "sample meal" that you'll be asked to evaluate on a special form we will give you.
Thank you so much for your understanding. It will allow for a seamless transition period while our kitchen is being renovated.
Santa Fe Reporter's Best of Santa Fe is open for voting and our organization has been nominated in two different categories! Click here to cast your vote for Kitchen Angels in the category of Best Nonprofit. And introducing Kitchenality in the category of Best Specialty Food or Kitchen Store. Show your love for the good work we do by casting your votes in our direction. We're happy that Kitchenality has made it on the "best of" map!

Tasty Tidbits
You have until
May 31st to do your research, select a recipe, and cook up a batch of Macaroons for
National Macaroon Day! Why do research? Because there is some
history and variation to take into consideration. The original French Macarons have s
supposedly been around since 1533 when Italian monks came to France joined by the pastry chefs of
Catherine de Medici, wife of
Henri II. The famed cookie has evolved over time and in different regions of the world. The French variety is a brightly colored, smooth-topped sandwich style cookie made out of meringue and almond flour, while the version we typically see in the US is made with coconut and looks like a haystack. Other varieties can be found in India, the Philippines, Turkey, Spain, and elsewhere. You'd be surprised! Here's a good place to start seeking recipes for your favorite type of
macaroon. We'd love to see the different macaroons that people come up with. Bring in a batch for others to try, with your version of this cookie's illustrious history.

Brian Bargsten, owner of Arroyo Vino with ambassador Dan Koffman on Angels Night Out

We hope you all had a chance to dine out during
Angels Night Out. The
Kitchen Angels staff got to enjoy different restaurants for each meal! There were many new restaurants this year. If you didn't get a chance to check them out during
Angels Night Out, please give them a visit. In fact, one way that we can ensure the future success of
Angels Night Out, is to dine throughout the year at participating restaurants. When you mention to the manager, waitstaff, or restaurant owner that you are grateful for their support of
Kitchen Angels, it makes them more likely to continue giving year after year. Our partner restaurants are truly generous and we want them to know how much we appreciate that. After all, who doesn't want to be reminded of the good things they do!

Kitchenality Volunteer Opportunities...
Kitchen Angels has had amazing success in creating an ongoing income stream from Kitchenality. In its first year alone, Kitchenality made over $100,000, which went directly to our meal delivery program. Volunteers and donors alike are to be applauded for their generosity of time and goods.
We receive donated items as humble as a well-used Tupperware container and
as fancy as fine silver and china. Every item is funneled to the place where it can do the most good, be that Kitchenality, Adelante, Casa Familia, Goodwill, or Things Finer.
We occasionally receive valuable collector's items that have the potential for bringing in a higher price through the internet. We are seeking volunteers who are familiar with listing items on an e-commerce site such as eBay. The volunteer(s) would be responsible for setting up and maintaining all aspects of the process of selling online. Please contact Janey Sherman for further details or if you'd like to volunteer.

Continuing Education
As the weather warms, it draws many of us outdoors. Hiking, visiting the Farmers Market, gardening, and other activities fill our schedules so there's less time for meal planning and cooking. When we make the time to plan out meals and craft a good shopping list, it increases our chances of eating healthfully and economically. A good meal plan takes time to create (just ask Teresa). Here's an interesting article on
The 5 Best Apps to Make Meal Planning Easy. There's something for everyone on this list: first timers, busy families, recipe seekers, multi-course masters, and budget-minded foodies. We've highlighted one of these apps already,
Yummly, where you can list preferred or avoided ingredients, then scroll through pictures of delicious food and recipes. It's a lot of fun. Let us know if any of these apps help make meal-planning easier for your family.
Life in Santa Fe is pretty wonderful all year long. We have mild winters, exciting and changeable springs, tolerable summers, and autumns that are unrivaled. We've noticed that it can be tricky for some people during seasonal transitions. Cold and flu season can be harsh when our bodies are trying to adjust to the changing weather. Spring into summer brings on the pinon pollen, and with it, plenty of sinus and respiratory issues. Here are some
helpful tips on how to best support your body through the transition from spring into summer.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
A great big word of THANKS to all 90 volunteer ambassadors who participated in our 19th annual
Angels Night Out. It was a banner year for us and we couldn't have done it without the help of so many wonderful volunteers, coordinators, and restaurants. As the checks roll in and our accountants double check their figures, we'll let you know how much we made on the event. We know many of you like to know how "your restaurant" did. You're welcome to drop by the office in the coming weeks to check on the status.
A letter from one of our clients
...Thank you for our Kitchen Angels meals! Elias has not been able to walk or stand since January and I have, in turn, been a full time caretaker without time to shop or cook. Your unique and incredible program has changed our lives towards a brightness that I would never have imagined. Each day when the volunteer, who is so personable, brings our dinners, it really is a delight equivalent to a Holiday meal...
To read the entire, sparkling letter, click here. You make the difference in people's lives. This is why we feed people who are homebound. This is all the thanks we'll ever need. Thanks to each of you for helping every step of the way to fulfill our mission.
