Michael's Memo
Sermon Series
If you were not here, last Sunday you missed our introduction to the sermon series: Inside Out: Emotional Healthy Spirituality The movie "Inside Out" tells the story of Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and schools.  Her story inspired me to explore the emotions behind stories in the Bible.

How does one lead an emotionally healthy spiritual life?  "Inside Out" raises this and other questions by entering the mind of eleven-year-old Riley. Five of her emotions become characters in the movie. The five characters in Riley's head led by Joy, guide her through life.  What does the Bible say about emotional life? Our worship will contrast some of the ideas from the film and instructions from the Bible during the series Inside Out: Emotional Healthy Spirituality. Inside Out continues in worship through Pentecost.  Come join us Sunday morning at 8:45 or 11 am.

En Agape',

Rev. Michael

April Schedule

Youth will conclude meeting on a regular basis this month as the school year hectically comes to a close. In April we packed 40 lunches for the Garden Club and raised close to $500 dollars. That profit will be put towards our mission trip the first week of July. Thank you for all of your support towards the youth program!

Outreach Opportunities

Easter Offering
In April, you donated $1,351.00 to the Easter offering bringing life, love and learning through the general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Your gift to the Easter offering helps congregations across the United States and Canada to share more deeply in the work that God is doing around the world.

ACES Food Drive - Our next food drive will be at the beginning of June.   We want to see if we can collect 500 items to donate to ACES as food or clean hygiene items.   So wait to collect your bags to fill in June and let's see if we can reach our goal!

Pentecost Special Offering will be received June 4 and June 11

District IX News
There is an event called Running For Anna that you heard about in worship on April 23rd from Darrell Wright which sponsors the building of a well in Uganda, Africa.   This run is in memory of Anna Wright, a former soccer player from Patrick Henry High School and Lynchburg College.   The 7t Annual 5K Memorial run/walk is on May 6 at 9:30 a.m.  Anyone from Slash who would like to participate is welcome to join.   As an act of support you are invited  and encouraged to register ($25), participate and support Independence Church and the 5K Run to provide clean water in Uganda. There are forms in the back of the sanctuary related to that special event for your information.    This is one way that we can share events and news between other churches in our district!

Mother's Day

You are invited  to help babies and their families served by our Global Mission Partners. Baby Boxes are given to every mother who completes four prenatal visits to the clinic. This ministry is making a big difference to the health of babies in rural India.

What's in the box?  A baby box contains many "luxury" items that the average rural family cannot afford, like diapers, blankets, sleepers, baby bath and shampoo.  The box will be made of sturdy rubberized plastic so that it will survive the monsoons and also can be reused.  To foster community participation, the blankets and sheets are sewn by the students in the community college the hospital operates.

How will they reach the moms?  The senior nursing staff, doctors, and nursing students have made visits to local villages to provide health education, prenatal visits and training using the Hospital's Mobile Clinic. Taking the clinic to the moms will give them more opportunities to complete four prenatal visits and be entitled to a baby box. Prenatal visits insure the health of mother and baby and help cut down on complications at birth.

Relay for Life Walk - Saturday June 17th

The Outreach Team is putting together a relay team for Slash Christian Church to help battle cancer.   Probably every one of you is related to someone or knows someone who has been affected by cancer.   Research is making progress and hopefully in the years to come, there will be a cure (or prevention) for many forms of cancer.  This year's Western Hanover Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 17th at Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness Campground in Doswell.
The Slash team link is www.relayforlife.org/westernhanoverva
Join now - don't wait - be a part of our team!
OR obtain a registration form from Cathy Tillman now so we can get our team registered and plan for this event.   We will be having a Name Your Price Bake Sale on May 21st to support our Relay for Life Team.  You will be able to purchase some sweet treats that day.

If you would like to make a donation, you may do so by making a tax deductible donation by check made payable to American Cancer Society and give to any team member.  SIGN UP TODAY and be a part of this great RELAY and Let's kick cancer right off the map!  Purchase a Luminaria for $10.00 in memory of someone who fought that battle or in honor of someone who is now fighting that battle. On the day of the event, we will plan a fellowship meal where we will all come together in HOPE, STRENGTH, and LOVE!  Be a part !

General Assembly 17

Be a witness for ONEness!
One of the last things Jesus did with his disciples was to bless them with the priestly prayer that appears in John 17. He prayed that, "I'm praying not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me because of them and their witness about me. The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind." (The Message)

In July we will gather as ONE for the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis. Thousands of Disciples gather from across the United States and Canada to demonstrate our unity in service to the Christ. We will hear inspiring messages, elect a new General Minister and President, hear about the results from Mission First! and learn together.

Bible studies on the theme text (John 17:20-21a) from scholars at Disciple-related seminaries are available online so you can go deeper into the scripture.

Why not post a "selfie" on social media with the tag #DOCWeAreOne.

On behalf of the rural families we serve I would like to express my deep appreciation for your generous donation. I send the appreciation of the staff of Rural Family Development of the Virginia Council of Churches. Your continued support is a blessing and an encouragement to us all.   Blessings, Dorothy Shears-Billups, Head Start Director

On behalf of the Virginia Council of Churches, please accept my gratitude for your continued support. It is support of Covenant Churches like yours that makes it possible to make real the prayer of our Lord that we might all be one. The work of the Council depends on gifts like yours. Please continue to hold the VCC and our mission in Christ in your prayers.  Blessing, The Rev. Dr. Jonathan M. Barton, General Minister

On behalf of the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care, we thank you for the contribution for the Ashland Center. The support of your congregation for the Counseling Aid Fund ensures that clients seeking pastoral counseling will receive services regardless of their ability to pay. In 2016, more than 1,900 counseling sessions were covered in part through the Counseling Aid Fund. Many were blessed to be supported through very difficult times by the outreach of your congregation. Best regards, Doug Thorpe, Ph.D., Executive Director

Please accept my sincerest gratitude for the recent donation from the congregation of Slash Christian Church. In 2016 we were able to help 1,757 families (4,078 individuals) because of the support we receive from churches, businesses, civic clubs, scouting groups and individuals in our area. Slash Christian Church has been a very faithful and longtime supporter of ACES. We are so very appreciative.   Sincerely, Bonnie D. Hoskin

Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Cane Ridge Shrine, Inc. Gifts such as yours help us to tell the Cane Ridge Story and welcome future generations of visitors as well.
