She has also served as an instructor for the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts where she has developed courses to prepare graduate level students for addressing the needs of children with autism and their families.

Her publications have focused on early identification of autism, contemporary intervention models, and programming guidelines for high functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome. She is also a co-author of the SCERTS Assessment Process.

Emily recently participated as a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Ad Hoc Committee on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), a committee charged with developing guidelines related to the role of speech-language pathologists in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of ASD.

She lectures internationally both in-person and through distance learning. Currently, the focus of her work is on supporting community-based educational systems to build internal capacity for serving children and adolescents with autism and related developmental disorders.

Brent Anderson
Thursday Evening Keynote

Brent Anderson is the inspiration for the book, Unintentional Humor®. Although, not diagnosed with autism until the age of 13, he began intensive speech and language therapy at 3 years old. Due to his literal interpretation of language, he often experienced frustration and anxiety while communicating with others. Working with speech therapist, Andrea Mann of Boulder, Colorado, Brent spent years learning the meaning of ambiguous words and phrases. Knowing that Brent's challenges were not unique, the idea for Unintentional Humor® was born. Although it took years to produce the finished product, it was well worth the wait. Brent worked closely with the artists to ensure that the graphics represent how he "saw" the words. His willingness to share his "literal mind" is the reason Unintentional Humor ® was created. Brent's incredible knowledge and creativity provide him excellent ideas for animated TV shows and comic books. He spends a great deal of time developing these ideas and hopes to someday find one of his concepts brought to life. He volunteers at the Humane Society in Ojai, CA and maintains his lifelong love of animals. He lives in Ventura, CA
