NEW THIS YEAR - The Vail Mountain Winter Uphill is the first race in the three-part  Vail Grail Winter Snow Race Series. Join us for the  EagleVail Derail Bike Race on Saturday, March 4 and the  Krueger Family Shamrock Shuffle on Saturday, March 18.  Register for all three races for only $60 adults/$70 students.

The annual Vail Mountain Winter Uphill Race and Hike returns on Sunday, Feb. 19, as skiers, snowboarders and winter runners tackle 2,200 vertical feet of groomed trails to reach Eagle's Nest at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola in Lionshead. This event is ideal for competitors and non-competitors featuring categories for each, and honors the memory of Vail local Lyndon Ellefson who was instrumental in starting the U.S. men's mountain running program, with some of the race/hike entry fees supporting the U.S. Mountain Running Team.
 
The event begins at 7 a.m. in the Lionshead base area, adjacent to the Eagle Bahn Gondola. Categories include ski, splitboard and non-ski options and prizes will be awarded by overall place and category by gender age group, including juniors 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+. The finish line features separate portals for competitive and non-competitive participants and results are posted for competitive racers only.

There will be no gondola access for spectators, however the Lionshead base area will provide a good viewing area for friends and family wishing to cheer on athletes. 
 
Following the race, Vail Resorts and US Foods will be providing free breakfast at Eagle's Nest for all event participants, and awards and raffle prizes will be handed out. All participants will automatically receive a raffle entry, so hold on to your bib numbers after the race. Must be present to win.

REGISTRATION/RACER INFORMATION

ONLINE
Register online today for only $30 for adults and $20 for students. Online registration will close at 1 p.m. on Saturday. 

IN-PERSON REGISTRATION AND BIB PICK UP
In-person registration will be available at the Arc'teryx store in Lionshead from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday. Preregistered participants may also pick up their bibs at this time.

DAY-OF REGISTRATION AND BIB PICK UP
Participants may still sign up on race day at the Lionshead ticket office. Day-of registration will cost $40 for adults and $30 for students and will begin at 6 a.m. Bib pick up will also be available from this location starting at 6 a.m.     

GEAR DROP
There will be a gear drop set up near the Eagle Bahn gondola in Lionshead on race morning. Racers may drop clothing off here that they would like taken to the top of the mountain by staff. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Start at base of gondola, straight across skier bridge, right onto Simba. Left onto Cheetah Cutoff, back to Simba, finishing with a steep climb up Racer Simba to the flat ridge. Slight downhill to finish.

VAIL GRAIL WINTER RACE SERIES

The Vail Winter Uphill Race and Hike is the first event in the new Vail Grail Winter Race Series. The Vail Grail is a new championship series consisting of three winter events - the uphill at Vail Mountain, a fat tire bike race and a snowshoe shuffle - and participants can sign up for one, two or all three races. Racers who complete all three races have a shot at winning the coveted Vail Grail, a permanent trophy that will bear the male and female division winners' names for years to come. Athletes wishing to participate in all three events and compete for the Vail Grail can  sign up for the full series for a discount of $60 .
