Community Law Center, Inc. and University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law are hosting the Urban Agriculture Law Conference on September 19th in Baltimore, Maryland to share information and best practices in urban agriculture laws, policies and practices across the country.

Three Workshops Announced!
The Urban Agriculture Law Conference will offer a variety of concurrent conference sessions throughout the day.  In addition to six panel sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to attend up to three interactive workshop sessions!

  • Entity Selection, Governance, Partnerships and Employment Law for Urban Farmers - This workshop by Kelsey Ripper of the Lawyers Alliance for New York, will address the basic legal logistics for urban agriculture organizations, with an emphasis on nonprofit organizations. The presenter will take the audience through the process of forming a corporation, applying for tax exemption, partnerships between nonprofits and for-profits, and the typical employment law issues that affect urban agriculture enterprises.

  • Community-Based Urban Agriculture Law & Policy - This workshop will be presented by Amy Laura Cahn, Esq. of the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia's Garden Justice Initiative.  It is intended to bring everyone to the table for a conversation - policy makers, lawyers, researchers, community leaders, individual gardeners, and market farmers. How can practitioners and researchers effectively work in partnership and share leadership with community residents who are doing the work on the ground? Using breakout groups and full group dialog, community needs will be identified and a set of values and principles that can be used to inform relationship and partnership building will be created.

  • Best Practices and Policies for the Start-up Urban Food Venture - This workshop by Priya Baskaran of Georgetown University Law Center's Social Enterprise & Nonprofit Law Clinic, explores the laws and policies surrounding fundraising and financing of food businesses in their start-up stages. Topics covered by the workshop include an introduction to various funding sources, crowd funding requirements and implications for both nonprofit and for profit ventures, discussion of various crowd funding platforms, and a look at successful municipal or state policies that promote funding these food-based ventures. The workshop is designed to assist urban entrepreneurs and the lawyers working with these entrepreneurs.

All of the conference sessions, including the workshops, are included in the Full Conference Pass. Don't miss your chance to get Early Bird rates!

Breakfast Speaker: Bill Struever

Bill Struever is a visionary real estate pioneer who has spent his entire career finding creative ways to reimagine urban properties.

One of Struever's most recent properties is the Baltimore Food Hub. This development is a planned campus of facilities, services, and programs focused on enhancing Baltimore's local food economy. The Food Hub, located at 1801 E. Oliver Street, is a 3.5-acre campus containing the historic Eastern Pumping Station-a glorious though sadly decayed 19th-century building that will be brought back to life. The Food Hub will play a major role in revitalizing East Baltimore, creating jobs and opportunities for the neighborhood while serving as an asset that will benefit the city and region.
