June 2015

looking ahead

Today the Supreme Court released a momentous decision in Obergefell v. Hodges , bringing marriage equality to all 50 U.S. states. Thirteen states' same-sex marriage bans are implicated in this ruling. PFund Foundation sends special congratulations to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer North Dakotans and  South Dakotans  who have long been working to advance LGBTQ rights and marriage equality in their home states.

On days like today, it is important to pause and celebrate the tenacious efforts leading up to this victory. Over the past decade, thousands of LGBTQ people and allies have catalyzed family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues to support marriage equality. We honor that progress and look ahead to the work that remains to be done.

This ruling marks a time for philanthropy to reflect on its role in advancing LGBTQ communities.

of foundation dollars are directed towards LGBTQ communities nationwide.

Very few foundations are prioritizing LGBTQ people despite the fact that some in our communities are in crisis. Trans* people are killed for simply being trans*. LGBTQ people of color face profiling, targeting, violence and murder throughout the country. While some in LGBTQ communities are flourishing, disparities and injustice within the larger LGBTQ community are stark and increasing.

LGBTQ people of color are up to six times more likely to live in poverty than white LGBTQ people.

A staggering 90% of transgender people have faced transphobic harrassment at work.

Ahead lies the important work of combatting structural racism, gender inequity, pervasive poverty and poor health for LGBTQ communities. The road ahead is long, and we are proud to travel it with you.

We can do better.  Today we took one step on the journey for social justice. Stand with PFund Foundation in congratulating LGBTQ families in North Dakota, South Dakota and around the country.  Stand with us while we fight discrimination, injustice, trauma and violence.  Stand with us while we invest in building healthy, connected and thriving LGBTQ communities.

We have come a long way and we have further still to go.

In Solidarity,

Trina C. Olson
Executive Director
