The Nature of Prophecy with Rabbi Leila Gal Berner
at 10:00 AM in the Library

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel describes the biblical prophets as men of passion, so pained by the injustices around them that they could not remain silent - so they championed justice, even at the risk of their own lives. But were they also politicians in the more traditional sense, interested in their own agendas? Together we will explore the nature of biblical prophecy from its origins through its heyday.
Coming Up
Saturday, March 17th

Pastor Johnny Felix will be making his second visit to Adat Shalom. He will  join Rabbi Sid on the bimah that Shabbat morning for a short presentation and song or two. Pastor Johnny's visit several years ago was a special event in the life of our congregation.

12:15 in the Double Classroom - we will have an information session to kick off recruitment for our 5th service mission to Haiti (Dec. 20-28, 2018). Rabbi Sid will once again be leading the mission. Over 50 Adat Shalom members have been on at least one mission to Haiti and they will tell you how transformative it was. As the work has evolved to more contact with NICL and less hard labor construction, the trip is appropriate for your teens as young as 14 to join you.

Honoring Our Elders at 1:00 PM in the Sanctuary
Each year, our Adat Shalom members who have or will reach their 83rd birthday are honored at a special Shabbat ceremony, including a group aliyah to the Torah, followed by a post-oneg program and reception.  This year we honor the following Elders of our community:

John Togut
Morris Albert
Neal Goldenberg

Bar mitzvah is perhaps the most commonly held age-specific Jewish life cycle milestone.  Our tradition teaches that seventy years is a complete life-span - that number would certainly be higher if we established the custom today!  At seventy, a full life, we begin counting again toward bar/bat mitzvah. Arriving at the marvelous age of eighty-three, we honor those who reach this milestone as Elders in the community.
