32nd Ward Newsletter
February 24, 2017

Chicago Scholars is looking for mentors for Chicago teens, helping them with support for everyday life and as they look to the future. Please read below for details on how you can volunteer your time and experience to help a teen in this program.

Do you need help on your property tax exemption paperwork? Have questions for county staff that deal with property taxes? County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. (8th District) and his staff will be working out of the 32nd Ward office on Tuesday the 28th of February from 3:00 - 6:00.  Bring your second installment tax bill and any documentation you have and staff will assist you with your questions.

There is also a TIF Forum hosted by  Cook County Clerk David Orr on March 2nd at 9 a.m. See below for details. I will be there with several panelists to discuss Tax Increment Financing in the county. Here's the Clerk's TIF 101 primer for those of you interested in learning more about the basics.

The Redflex red light camera company that was banned from doing business with the City of Chicago has been cleared to do business with us again. In a settlement with the City, Redflex has agreed to pay the City $20 Million in installments through 2023. Two Redflex executives and a City employee were convicted for their part in the bribery scandal. The Redflex scandal and red light cameras program has been well documented by David Kidwell at the Chicago Tribune. The reasoning by City Hall for reinstating RedFlex was based on the company's "acceptance of responsibility for its wrongdoing, its efforts at reform and its commitment to pay restitution."  The Chicago Inspector General has also audited aspects of the red light camera program - details on their audits and investigative work on RLC's can be found here.
Based on the history of their performance and the scandal, this is one company that should be permanently banned from doing business with the City of Chicago.

There's some great ways to support your local school or park this late winter (spring), so take a look below at several upcoming events hosted by parents, organizations and businesses helping out the community.

Have a nice weekend,
