The Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) is coordinating bagged leaf and other yard waste collection trucks this fall to assist residents in clearing their yards, parkways and storm drains of leaves and other natural debris.

Residents can call 311 to request separate bagged leaf collection from October 17 through November 30. Leaves and other yard waste should be left in the alley and bagged separately from garbage in the black carts and separately from recycling in the blue carts. Using paper bags available from hardware stores is a good option and can be marked as compostable materials. A DSS truck will collect the bags based on 311 requests and take it to be composted. Please help us by clearing drains on your block of all debris before cold weather hits Chicago.

The City of Chicago is removing several blocks of parking in Lakeview around Wrigley Field and throughout parts of North Center and Lincoln Park.  Be aware of the closures and prepare for additional closures during all upcoming Cubs World Series games.

The Chicago City Council's Progressive Reform Caucus will host a community town hall meeting to seek feedback and concerns from Chicago residents regarding the Emanuel administration's proposed FY 2017 municipal budget on Nov. 3 at 6:30 pm at Malcolm X College.

The Progressive Caucus organized the town hall, as it has done in recent years, to encourage Chicagoans to deliver their own ideas, concerns and suggestions regarding the 2017 budget. The Caucus will move to enter the comments received at the meetings into the public record at the next City Council meeting.  You can view a preview of this upcoming 2017 budget via a short panel discussion that took place at the City Club of Chicago earlier this week.

Have a nice weekend,

Sewer Repair on Logan Blvd.
The City will be replacing the portions of the 12" sewer on the southern drive of Logan Blvd, from Sacramento to Campbell in early November.  Repair has already begun at the California intersection.  Below is a map of the area where they will be working. Keep in mind addresses outside of these limits will be affected; these are only the limits of the sewer that will be replaced.

Halloween Safety Tips
Halloween can and should be a day of fun for the children and families of our city who wish to take part in the custom of trick-or-treat. By practicing some basic safety tips you and your children can enjoy a safe and enjoyable Halloween!

Costumes: Ensure that your children's costumes are light colored so that they are easily visible. If you have to use dark colors, place reflective tape in several parts of the costume -- across the back and on the front and sides to ensure that no matter what direction they are facing, your children can be seen. Stay away from masks. Most masks will restrict your children's vision; consider face paint instead.

Company: Young children should never trick-or- treat without an adult. If you can't accompany  your children, make sure they go trick-or-treating  with an adult or responsible young adult you  know well. It's always safer to go out with a  group of family and/or friends

Location: Advise your children to only visit homes that they know and to stay out on the porch or outside to receive their treats. Do not let them enter abandoned buildings or approach anyone in a car.

Timing: Try to trick-or-treat during daylight hours. If you're going out in the dark, make sure to visit houses with good outdoor lighting. If your children are going out with friends, create a plan of when you should expect them back.

Treats: Encourage your kids to only accept treats that are wrapped. Toss out any fresh fruit, unwrapped candy, or any suspicious looking treat. When giving treats, consider small toys or bubbles.

Walk! Don't Run! Obey common sense and pedestrian rules, such as look both ways before crossing. Many boos and ghouls will be out this night so use extra caution while walking or driving!

Free Senior Enrichment Seminar
Prescription drug misuse and abuse affects people from various backgrounds, but the senior population is more vulnerable than others. How many bottles of prescription medicines do you have in your medicine cabinet? How long have you had these bottles of medicines? Can all of these medicines be taken together or should some medicines not be taken along with others?

Please join the Circuit Court of Cook County Elder Justice Center (CCEJC) on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, to get answers to questions about how to properly use prescription medicines. The CCEJC will be hosting a seminar as part of its Senior Enrichment Seminar Series entitled "Senior Awareness: Prescription Drug Misuse and Adverse Effects."   Topics that will be covered are as follows:
  • Substance abuse, misuse, and dependency
  • Adverse effects
  • Prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, and polypharmacy issues
The seminar will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Richard J. Daley Center, 50 West Washington Street, Chicago, Illinois, in Courtroom 2005, on the 20th Floor.
November is National Runaway Prevention Month
During National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM) in November, the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) and its partners raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face.

Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away in a year. By participating in the following NRPM national activities, youth service agencies, community groups, and individuals can show America's runaway and homeless youth that they are not invisible and they are not alone:
  • Facebook Profile Picture Filter on Nov. 2 : Add the NRPM filter available in November to your profile picture.
  • Wear Green Day on Nov. 19: Take a photo wearing something green, the symbol of NRPM, and post it to social media with #NRPM2016.
  • Candlelight Vigil on Nov. 16: Host a candlelight vigil in a neighborhood, school, place of worship, or other venue to show solidarity with youth in crisis.
  • Selfie Sign Day on Nov. 23: Download the "Selfie Sign" from the NRPM website take a photo with it, post it to social media using the caption "This is how I have helped a friend...," and encourage others to share a story of how they have helped a friend.

Workshop to Restore Driver's Licenses
In an effort to help those who have lost their drivers license preventing them from being hired, the St. Paul Community Development Ministries has partnered with Secretary of State Jesse White's Mobile Unit and the John Marshall Law School Pro Bono Clinic to restore those licenses closing that barrier to a road of employment.

The accord calls for the Secretary of State's Mobile Unit and John Marshall Law School's pro bono team of lawyers and law students to review the driving records of those who have lost their drivers license and provide applicants with the information they need to restore their driving privileges.
