Alderman Scott Waguespack, 32nd Ward Newsletter
April 8, 2016

There has been a switch in garbage and recycling collection days for city users. Details for your 32nd Ward neighborhood are listed below and this link will take you to the citywide map schedule.

Also, please don't forget to check the street sweeping map below and print off your copy for a friend or neighbor. Other ward maps should be available on the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation webpage in the near future. The most important thing you can do to help keep streets cleaner is to clean your curb area in front of your home or business before the sweepers arrive.  Landscape debris is one the biggest culprits blocking drains so please make sure any landscaping is done properly and all materials are blocked from going off of the parkways into the curbs.

New garbage collection fees hit the mailboxes the last few weeks. Information specific to senior citizens is in the pamphlet attached to this email. The pamphlet has information about garbage and sewer fee discounts. If you need assistance, please call the number listed or call our office at 773-248-1330 and ask for Kerri, who can work with you on any documentation you may need.

Thanks to the staff at HOPES for today's lively learning and action meeting on Chicago's homeless youth. Our panel included students and mothers who have experienced homelessness, as well as academics and activists helping children.
Chicago HOPES for Kids, is an organization tha t offers children living in Chicago's homeless shelters homework help, math and reading support, cultural enrichment opportunities, and field trips. There are presently an estimated 22,205 homeless CPS students; 5,000 more than the 2011-12 school year.  The HOPES group is always looking for volunteers if you are interested.

Have a nice weekend,

Self Certification for Unified Billing for Water and Garbage Collection; Bills Going Out This Month
Part of Mayor Emanuel's 2016 city budget included a new garbage collection fee.  Chicago residences that receive garbage collection services provided by the Department of Streets and Sanitation will begin paying a garbage service fee of $9.50 per month per dwelling unit.  Residents living in buildings with five or more units will continue to pay for private garbage collection service, and this fee will not apply to them.

To allow for one bill and one payment for City-provided services, the garbage fee will appear on a new, unified utility bill that reflects charges for water and sewer services provided by the Department of Water Management and garbage services provided by the Department of Streets and Sanitation. Residents will start to see bills arriving this month.

To ensure accurate billing, it is strongly recommended that residents verify the number of dwelling units identified at their property online at www.cityofchicago.org/garbagefee. Through the self certifications process, residents can view the number of dwelling units identified at their property as shown in City billing records. If this number is incorrect, residents can update the number of units through the step by step self-certification process.

Any updates to the number of dwelling units may take up to three weeks to process.  For any updates that lower the number of dwelling units at the property, the City will retroactively adjust the bill and subsequent bills will also reflect the updated number of dwelling units.

Utility Billing Customer Service at 312-744-4426 is available to residents that do not have access to a computer or need assistance with the self-certification process.

Below is the bill insert for residents with a metered account that will receive their first unified utility bill in April and for all residents with a non-metered account. For additional information, please visit www.cityofchicago.org/garbagefee.

Dog Licenses/Pet Information
Why Register Your Dog?
  • It helps the city locate your lost dog. A person who finds your dog can call 312-744-DOGS with your registration number (on your dog's tag).
  • Dogs must be registered in order to stay at dog boarding and daycare service facilities.
  • Dog registration is a prerequisite for acquiring permission to enter Chicago Park District dog-friendly areas.
  • It's the law! Municipal Code 7-12-140 requires all dogs four months and older be registered with the City of Chicago.
Requirements for Dog Registration
Dogs must have a current rabies vaccination. Get your dog vaccinated at any Chicago area veterinarian clinic or other licensed provider.
License Terms and Expiration
Your dog's registration expires on either the registration expiration date (i.e. 1 or 3 years after purchase, depending on the length you purchase) or the expiration date of its current rabies vaccination, whichever comes first. Since rabies vaccinations typically last either one or three years (depending on the vaccination administered by your dog's vet), the Clerk's office offers dog registration in 1 year and 3 year increments.
Click here for more information on registering your dog.

Leash Laws

According to Municipal Code  7-12-030 , anytime you take your  dog onto public property (excluding a city  dog park), it needs to be leashed.  Any owner who violates this law can be fined $300.00 per violation and up to $10,000 plus jail time if an attack occurs while their  dog is off leash.

Many times, people are confident that they will be able to control their  dog without a leash; however, you are risking your pet's and others' safety whenever you have your  dog unleashed.  It is possible something might spook or startle your  dog, which could cause it to run into traffic, or after someone.  It is also possible another animal might try to attack it, and without a leash, it will be harder for you to be in control of the situation.  Please, for everyone's safety, including your own pet, always err on the side of caution and keep your  dog leashed.

Pick Up After Your Dogs

Our office often gets calls about irresponsible dog owners who don't pick up after their pets.  Not only is this unsightly (and messy), but dog feces is one of main causes for rats.  Per Municipal Code 7-12-420 , not picking up after your dog can result in a ticket between $50.00- $500.00 per violation.  Please help keep your neighborhood clean and pick up after your dog.
